After Groups B, C, and D kicked off the 2025 ICC Women's Under-19 T20 World Cup on the opening day, the spotlight shifts to Group A on the second day. Defending champions India will begin their title defence against the West Indies at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur. The venue holds fond memories for the Indian team, as they lifted the Asia Cup there in December last year. The defending champions, led by Niki Prasad, come into the tournament having defeated South Africa and Scotland in their warm-up games. At the forefront of their campaign is right-handed opener Trisha G, whose impactful starts have been crucial to India’s success. Her opening partner and wicketkeeper, Kamalini G, also showed promise with decent knocks in the warm-ups. Alongside them, skipper Prasad and Sanika Chalke will be pivotal in the batting department as India look to secure back-to-back titles. While it is rare to see as many as three slow-left-arm orthodox bowlers in a playing XI, this unique attack has been a vital cog for the Prasad-led unit, with Parunika Sisodia, Aayushi Shukla, and Sonam Yadav playing crucial roles. In terms of pace bowling, Shabnam, Joshitha V J, and Mithila Vinod Vinod will be the key options, with Shabnam bringing valuable experience from playing in the Women’s T20 League in India. As for the West Indies, their campaign in the inaugural edition of the ICC Women's Under-19 T20 World Cup ended in the Super Six stage. They began their warm-up campaign this edition with a defeat to New Zealand but bounced back to edge past Nepal in their final game. The West Indies have always relied on their all-rounders, whether in the senior or junior ranks and across both men's and women's cricket. This tournament is no exception, with their Samara Ramnath-led side looking to tap into this strength. Ramnath, herself an accomplished allrounder, will play a pivotal role with the bat and through her off-breaks. While Ramnath has the experience of playing in the Caribbean Premier League, another key allrounder, Asabi Callender, has experience on the World Cup stage, having been part of the 2023 edition. A top-order batter and a right-arm medium-pace bowler, Asabi also has List-A cricket experience back home in the West Indies. If the West Indies hope to make a deep run in the competition, it will also require players like Amrita Ramtahal, Abigail Bryce, and Jahzara Claxton to click with the bat. Claxton, in particular, will also play a key role with the ball, taking on seam bowling duties. Can Samara Ramnath and her team conjure a spirited display to upset India's apple cart in the opener? Or will the girls in blue kickstart their title defence with a win? We shall find out soon.
