That wraps up the formalities of the first Test. It looked like an off-beat drama for the first four days but today was certainly an action-packed thriller towards the end. The next Test begins in Vizag on 17th November. Do join us for that one. Action starts at 0930 IST. Until then, it's goodbye from us.
MOEEN ALI (MAN OF THE MATCH) feels that it was a really good pitch. States that he enjoyed batting with Root. Adds that England prepared well for this series with the matches in Bangladesh. Says that he has consciously tried to improve his bowling in the last 3 years. Opines that he can still get better. Lauds his spin partners for not letting the Indian batsmen off the hook. Hopes that they can keep it going throughout the series. States that he is happy with the overall performance of his side.
VIRAT KOHLI feels that the ending was a bit tense but it was also a good opportunity for his side to learn new aspects of the game. Mentions that such mentally testing phases are crucial for a side to succeed as a top team. Adds that India could have done better in the first two days, especially in fielding where several catches were dropped. States that the catching cost his side a lot. Praises England for the strong performance and insists that they never take the visitors lightly. Doesn't feel too unhappy with his team's performance in the game but wants them to iron out the flaws going forward to the next game.
ALASTAIR COOK says that it was a really tough five days. Felt that the toss was vital but adds that execution was more crucial. Says that he is proud of his team, especially the bowlers who didn't let India's batsmen to score quickly. Praises the debutant for the second innings half century. Reveals that the declaration timing was done in such a way that only they could win the game. Mentions that the track was really flat for the first three days and then started to take spin gradually. Feels that all the England spinners were superb and singles out Rashid for a special performance. Ends by saying that it's a performance that England can be proud of.
When England came back to bat, the openers were solid and positive in their approach. Cook and Hameed stitched together a mammoth 180 run-stand before the latter tried to up the ante and missed out on his century on debut. However, Cook carried on and it was a special century that helped England set a target of 310. England had a go at the hosts with 49 overs remaining in the day. They just fell short by four wickets to register what would have been a magnificent victory.
India came out and gave a solid reply with the bat. Pujara and Vijay stitched together a marathon 209-run stand and hit brilliant centuries. Ashwin down the order, batted intelligently with the tail and scored a brilliant half century to take India close to 500. However, India conceded a lead of 49 to the visitors. Rashid was the star as he produced a brilliant display of spin bowling to take four wickets. Woakes tested the Indian batsmen constantly with his disciplined lines and lengths but was unlucky to not get any reward.
Earlier in the match, England batted superbly to notch up 537 on the board. They rode high on the back of centuries from Root, Ali and Stokes. Indian bowlers were made to toil hard on a good batting track. Jadeja was the most successful with three wickets.
It turned out to be a cracker of a match in the end. A half an hour earlier declaration may have seen the English side sneaking in a victory. Rashid weaved his magic around and took three crucial wickets to put immense pressure on India. Other bowlers played the perfect foil to him and kept the batsmen on their toes. Virat Kohli was the one who stood like a thorn and steered the home side to safe lands and Jadeja enjoyed himself in the end.
Kohli and Cook are having a chat. Yes, the handshakes are out. That's officially the end of the first Test of this lengthy 5-match series between India and England. MATCH HAS BEEN DRAWN.
