Right then, that is it from this game but the action in the Big Bash League 2022-23 continues on Tuesday, the 3rd of January, as Melbourne Stars take on Melbourne Renegades in the 'Melbourne Derby.' That game begins at 1.45 pm IST (8.15 am GMT) but you can join us early for the build-up. Cheers!
Caleb Jewell (54 runs off 28 balls) is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. Starts by saying that it's been a little while since he has played this way. Shares that he has not changed much and feels that he was batting nicely in the last few games. Mentions that the pitch was a good one to bat on. Further says that with D'Arcy Short moving down the order, his job in the team is to attack the bowlers in the Powerplay. Hopes to take the confidence forward and find some momentum.
The Presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, Peter Siddle won the toss and opted to bat first and this turned out to be a good decision as after losing an early wicket, the Strikers were able to put their foot on the accelerator. Chris Lynn was back to his lethal best as he made 87 big runs. The likes of Matthew Short and Colin de Grandhomme too played valuable knocks and for the Hurricanes, Patrick Dooley and Riley Meredith were the picks of the bunch. During the chase, a big opening stand between Caleb Jewell and Ben McDermott put Hobart Hurricanes on top and they breezed through to victory.
There is something wrong with the Strikers and probably they can't even pinpoint what it actually is! With a solid total on the board, their bowlers were completely blown away in the Powerplay, and even after that, the likes of Rashid Khan and Wes Agar were taken to the cleaners. The wickets did come for them in the Power Surge but they failed to capitalize and the game slipped away rather quickly. Apart from the skipper Peter Siddle and Harry Conway, everyone else received a lot of stick and they never really stood a chance of winning the game.
With an initial required rate of almost 9 runs per over, the Hurricanes' openers started off in fine fashion. Both Caleb Jewell and Ben McDermott looked to attack from the start but it was the former who timed the ball sweetly and found the fence with regularity. Jewell, trusted to open in place of D'Arcy Short, rocketed his way to a fifty before getting out and the opening stand ended on 86 runs. McDermott kept on going and reached his fifty as well. It was then two solid knocks by D'Arcy Short and Tim David in the latter stages that sealed the win for Hobart.
A comprehensive win then in the end for Hobart Hurricanes who have made a competitive total look under-par. The Hurricanes pick up their third win of the competition and as for the Strikers, they succumb to a fourth loss on the trot, worrying signs for them.

Harry Conway To D'Arcy Short
HOBART HURRICANES WIN BY 7 WICKETS and with 16 balls to spare. Conway delivers it on a good length and around off, D'Arcy Short tries to heave across the line but gets an inside edge. It beats the stumps by a whisker and scoots down to fine leg. They cross and that's that from this game.

Harry Conway To D'Arcy Short
Short in length and wide outside off, D'Arcy throws his bat at it but fails to make any connection. Interestingly, it's not called a wide.

SIX! Two lusty blows and scores are level. This one is served right in the slot for the batter, a low full toss. Tim David clears his front leg and hoists it behind the bowler's head for a maximum. 22 from the over.

Leg bye! Half a shout for lbw but it is turned down. This is the googly from Rashid Khan and it seems to be turning into the pads. Tim David looks to tuck it off the back foot but misses. The ball rolls away off the pads onto the off side and they get a leg bye.

Rashid Khan To Tim David
DROPPED AND FOUR! Poor cricket all around. Rashid Khan drags this one down on the pads. It is there to be hit and Tim David pulls it away but he hits it straight to the man at the square leg fence. Wes Agar doesn't even have to move an inch but ends up making a meal of the catch. The ball also rolls into the fence after spilling out from his grasp.
Rashid Khan comes back into the attack to bowl his last over. 1 for 32 from the Afghan so far.
