That is it from this game and it is Delhi who get back to winning ways, leaving Gujarat with just one win on the board. The action in the Women's T20 League 2023 continues on Sunday, the 12th of March with table-toppers Mumbai taking on an impressive UP side at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but you can join us a lot early for the build-up as well. Cheers!
Marizanne Kapp (4-0-15-5) wins the Player of the Match award for her exceptional bowling performance. Starts by saying that she wanted to perform badly. Admits that she hasn't been at her best in previous matches with her line and length. Adds that she is glad to hit the right areas and benefit from it. Mentions that they have a great group of players and it is amazing to be a part of this team.
The skipper of Delhi, Meg Lanning says that it was cool to watch Shafali Verma from the other end and it was some of the cleanest hitting she has seen. Adds that she told her to keep it simple and hit straight and that is exactly what she did. Mentions that it seemed like a new ball wicket and they wanted to make sure to play the balls on merit and tried to go after the balls if they were full or short. On Marizanne Kapp, Meg says that bowling on a good length is what she does best and she hit her mark amazingly well. Ends by saying that they bowled well and to end like that with the bat feels amazing
The Presentation ceremony...
The player of the moment, Shafali Verma (76* off 28 balls) is down for a chat. She says that she wanted to give her best and wasn't after finishing the game early. Adds that she got out playing the flick in the last game and tried playing as straight as possible and thanks her coaches and family. Mentions that she loves hitting maximums and will keep on working hard to improve. Adds that Meg Lanning and her were just trying to back each other and that helps on the ground. Says that the wicket was good and the ball was skidding and if they were batting first, they would have tried to score 200 runs.
Gujarat's captain Sneh Rana starts by saying that the girls did their best, but it just wasn't their day. Informs that the wicket was a bit skiddy. Praises Shafali Verma's knock and says that she was incredible throughout the innings.
Earlier in the game, Sneh Rana won the toss and Gujarat opted to bat first and set the tone in a big game but things didn't go to plan one bit. Marizanne Kapp ran through their top order and even the incoming Laura Wolvaardt couldn't impress much. Harleen Deol, their in-form batter played a couple of good shot but fell as well for 20 runs and Kapp bowled four overs on the trot, ending up with five wickets in the kitty. After that Georgia Wareham and Kim Garth put on a decent stand for Gujarat before Shikha Pandey picked up three wickets as well, slowing down the run-scoring yet again. Garth ended up with a crucial unbeaten 32 to take Gujarat over the 100-run mark. Coming to the chase, the Delhi openers didn't even break a sweat with Shafali Verma in full flow and got the win to go level on points with Mumbai.
Gujarat and their injury issues don't seem to end and neither does their misery as this is the second time in four games where they were not upto the mark with bat or ball. Defending a low score and skipper Sneh Rana not taking the field, Kim Garth started off decently with ball in hand. But after the first over, it all went haywire and their bowlers were hammered all around the park and even Ashleigh Gardner wasn't spared. In the end, they succumbed to a deflating loss, their third in four games.
Chasing a modest target of 106 runs, Delhi started off watchfully in the first over but after that Shafali Verma just went into overdrive. She took on every bowler that came into the attack and took them apart as well. Verma reached 50 in just 19 balls and didn't slow down until the end, finishing with an unbeaten 76 off just 28 balls. Meg Lanning who was ball-watching for the most part too played a few lovely shots and became the first batter to surpass 200 runs in the tournament, also hitting the winning runs.
What a stunning comeback this has been by Delhi! They were outclassed by Mumbai in the previous game but have come out in this game with a positive mindset and have simply handed Gujarat a real thumping.
