Right then! That is all we have for you from this Test, I hope you enjoyed our coverage. The Test didn't end with a result but it was a great game of cricket. If it hadn't rained on Day 3, then we could have probably witnessed a result, but such is life. The game might be over but the series isn't. The second Test between England and New Zealand will be played on 10th June 2021 at Birmingham. The match will start at 1100 local (1000 GMT), but like always, our build-up starts before that. Do join us then! Till then, stay safe and goodbye!
Devon Conway is the MAN OF THE MATCH, says that it is a special feeling to get a double ton on debut. Adds that the wicket was a bit two-paced but it was a good Test match wicket. Says that he is grateful for getting the opportunity to play for New Zealand at the later part of his career. Adds that it was about expecting that the English bowlers weren't gonna leak a lot of runs and working through that.
Joe Root is up for a chat, he says that they looked to build a foundation at the start of the innings. He adds that it could have been easy for New Zealand to open the door but the batters did well to show character. He mentions that in the first innings they could have been more disciplined. As batters and individuals, they needed to show more discipline. He praises Burns and says that he was fantastic throughout and played phenomenal first innings coming back to the side and showed great resilience and character.
Kane Williamson is down for a chat, he says that they had a bit of work to do in the morning before they could declare. Says the if there wasn't a washout on Day 3, there could have been a result. Adds that Conway's performance was incredibly special and that he played within himself and that it is an incredible feat to get a double ton on debut. About their bowling, says that Tim Southee led the attack beautifully for them. Adds that both the teams could have pushed for a result if a day wasn't lost due to rain.
Earlier in the Test, a sublime double ton by Conway on debut put New Zealand at the top as they got to 378 in the first innings. For England, it was their debutant, Ollie Robinson who impressed and picked up 4 wickets. In reply to New Zealand's 378, England could only manage to 275. Their batting revolved around Rory Burns as he batted till the very end. He found good support from Joe Root and Ollie Robinson. For New Zealand, it was Tim Southee who shone by taking 6 wickets.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand set a target of 273 for England after declaring their innings at 169. They scored brisk runs in the morning. For England, it was their debutant, Ollie Robinson who once again did well with the ball and picked up 3 wickets in the second innings of New Zealand.
If New Zealand had to win this game, they needed to pick 10 wickets in two sessions. Which meant they needed early wickets but that wasn't to be. They bowled in the right channels but failed to get either of the English openers out early. Finally, it was Neil Wagner who broke through with the wicket of Rory Burns and then Tim Southee picked Zak Crawley soon after. They bowled fairly well but weren't able to get the wickets needed. Mitchell Santner struggled with the ball and they didn't have enough time to pick the required wickets.
England needed 273 to win the game but from the very start of their innings, it was pretty evident that they were not really interested in going for the win. Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley started cautiously and batted with the sole purpose of blocking the deliveries. Rory Burns fell after a good knock but Dominic Sibley carried on. He was very impressive as he showed great patience and looking very solid while defending the balls. Zak Crawley didn't trouble the scorers much but Sibley found a good partner in Joe Root. The English skipper started slowly but then scored a decent knock of 40 runs. He was out to a peach of a delivery by Neil Wagner and a few more wickets after that could have spelled trouble for England. But Ollie Pope joined Dominic Sibley and both of them batted their team to safety.
Kane Williamson has decided to shake hands and call it a draw. End of a good Test match, it could have produced a result if Day 3 hadn't been washed out due to rain. A good performance by both the teams and England would be happy with the way their batters showed grit in the second innings.
