Right then! Thanks for your company for this game where England have convincingly sealed the game. Both the teams will meet once again at the same ground for the 2nd ODI. That game will be played on Saturday, 1st August 2020 and it will begin at 1830 IST. Join us for that game. Until then, goodbye and stay safe.
For his tormenting bowling display and his maiden 5-fer in ODIs, David Willey is named the Player of the Match. Willey says that he was not sure as he would get an opportunity and says he is happy to wear the Three Lions jersey again. Admits that being part of the 4-year plan and then missing out on the World Cup squad was very difficult but credits the team for the way they performed. Admits that he was thinking about the World Cup squad before but now that is not in his head as he missed out. Tells he is enjoying his cricket and is hopeful that the result keeps coming.
England skipper, Eoin Morgan says that he is happy and credits David Willey as it is generally a good pitch to bat on. Says he showed a lot of courage and it was a very good comeback. Credits Saqib Mahmood as well. Admits they struggled to put partnership before him and Billings did that. On coming back from the break, Morgan tells that the more time they can see guys in pressure situations the better it is. Hopes that the guys can step up and push themselves into the best 15 side. On the talent in the squad, he says it is excellent and credits the guys who have been in the 18 throughout the 4-year period. Tells that they will make assessments on seeing how the bowlers pull up and decide the team for the next game.
Ireland skipper, Andy Balbirnie, says that it was a disappointing day as they did not read the conditions well, and admits that it was going to be tough after being 28/5 against a side like England. Tells they should have dug in and stuck around to get a decent score. Tells they should fight in the second innings. On Campher, he says he played a really good innings and has a great future. Admits that if one of the top order players played an innings like that then it would have been different. On McCarthy's injury, Andrew hopes it is not too serious and he is okay. Credits the bowler for their efforts and giving them the hope by creating openings.
Stay with us for the presentation!
For England, David Willey was lethal with the ball from the start and took his first ODI fifer. He got good support from Saqib Mahmood who got two wickets. Adil Rashid bowled a brilliant spell at the start of the innings and was effective with the ball, giving away just 30 in his 10-over spell and getting a wicket to his name as well. Tom Curran too bagged a wicket. England will be really happy with the win!
Earlier in the match, after asking Ireland to bat first, England made a perfect start as David Willey removed experienced Paul Stirling in the first over. Willey struck three more times by the 7th over to leave Ireland tattering. Their 5 batters were back in the hut with score reading just 28. However, debutant Curtis Campher came to the rescue as he scored a half-century to add some respectability to the total. Andy McBrine also made someuseful runs. Their partnership meant that Ireland somehow crawled to 172.
Ireland started brightly with the ball even though they lost Barry McCarthy in the first over as he went off due to a kneeinjury. McBrine and Young didn't give up got wickets early on in the innings. However, with a very small total in the bank, it was always going to be an uphill task for Ireland.Billings and Morgan took the game by the scruff off the neck and destroyed the visitors later on.
England faltered at the start as they lost wickets early on. While Bairstow fell in the third over itself, the others got the start but could not continue. However, with the target being so modest, England just needed one good partnership. Sam Billings and Eoin Morgan just provided that by adding an unbeaten 96-run stand. Billings made a fine half-centuryon his comeback game to help England take a lead in this series. Morgan played the responsible role as a captain while also smashing shots all around the park.
That is that! A comfortable victory for England in the first match of this 3-match ODI series. Englandhad started the Test series against West Indies with a defeat but this is the ODI formatand Ireland were up against the World Champions. It was never going to be easy for the visitorsand their start with the bat made things even difficult for them. The first ODI game at home for the Three Lions post their World Cup victory and it starts on a positive note!
