That's a wrap - It was a thoroughly absorbing opening day of warm-up action at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Up next, Oman face Sri Lanka A at the Colombo Cricket Ground, while the Netherlands and Zimbabwe will test their combinations at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium. In Chennai, Nepal will go up against United Arab Emirates as well. All these matches will be played on Tuesday, 3rd February, with coverage beginning at 7.30 am GMT. Make sure to join us early for all the build-up. Cheers!
Italy land a timely twist - Canada were still some distance away with the asking rate pushing into the nines and tens as JJ Smuts and Harry Manenti, the two seasoned pros, put on a squeeze through the middle overs against two relatively new batters. Italy did land a sharp counterpunch, picking up quick wickets to slide Canada from 100/2 to 117/5 and suddenly swinging the momentum their way. However, the collapse owed as much to Canada’s own misjudgement, with ordinary decision-making and questionable shot selection handing Italy those openings. And after losing Navneet Dhaliwal, Canada's chase derailed completely to no repair, losing by 10 runs.
Canada initiated strongly in their pursuit - Canada began cautiously, with Yuvraj Samra and Dilpreet Bajwa taking stock early on. Once Samra broke free, the scoring rate jumped, lifting Canada to 52 without loss at the end of the Powerplay. Pushing to stay ahead of the asking rate, Samra fell to his own aggression, but the platform was firmly set. Bajwa kept things calm and composed, ensuring the chase stayed on track, but Draca came back into the attack and dismissed him at a very crucial time, pushing Canada for a rebuild.
Italy fired early, lost grip late - Italy flew out of the blocks through the Mosca brothers, with Justin and Anthony providing a flying Powerplay that carried them to 51/1. The momentum dipped sharply once both openers fell in quick succession, forcing a rebuild. JJ Smuts and Wayne Mudsen stitched together a steady 33-run stand, and with Smuts scoring at a fair clip, a 160-plus total looked quite a possibility at one stage. Canada, however, hit back smartly, squeezing the middle and death overs, denying Italy the finish they were lining up. Only 40 runs came in the last five overs as Italy were restricted to 156.
Italy show character under pressure - A superb fightback by the Italians. It may have been only a warm-up game, but they showed impressive maturity and composure against a fairly experienced Canadian side. At the halfway mark, 157 looked like a modest chase, however, the Italian bowlers ensured it was anything but straightforward.
