That's it from all of us here. Hope you liked our coverage today. Will the visitors make a comeback or will the hosts prevail again? Do join us for the second ODI between the two sides on 6th December at the Manuka Oval, Canberra at 0850 IST to find out. Until then, it's goodbye and take care!
Man of the Match, Australia skipper Steven Smith donates some of his money to charity. He states that he was lucky, was out lbw at one stage but was happy to make it count by posting a big total. Adds that he was looking to set standard in the field and admits that he got a bit hurt when he caught that blinder. Calls it a pleasing thing to get over the line. Credits Cummins for bowling well with some good pace and control. Admits that Head is a smart player, he too got lucky and made it count. Acknowledges that they need to keep preforming since they have been disappointing in the last few series. He is aware that NZ will come back hard but hopes his team can keep the momentum going and seal the series in the next game. Calls it important to smile, since that is why you play the game. Ends by saying that they are always looking to improve as a team.
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson says that they bowled poorly in the middle stage. Credits Smith for playing a brilliant knock. Admits that it is tough chasing such a big score. Acknowledges that they were good in patches. Adds that he was happy with the way they responded with the bat in the chase. Credits Guptill for scoring a fantastic hundred and feels that had they lost few wickets less in the middle stage, they could have pushed Australia more. Hopes that they can do better in the next game.
Earlier, Australia were reduced to 92/4 before a superb stand between Smith and Head rescued them. Both of them were gifted lives and they made the opposition pay for it dearly. Smith was dropped on 13 and went on to score a stupendous 164. Trent Boult was the only bowler who posed any threat and New Zealand will rue their missed chances in the field. They are 0-1 behind in the series and will look for a win in Canberra to stay alive in the series.
A spirited performance from the Kiwis with the bat to try and chase down 325 but it always looked 50-60 too many for them and that was in fact the margin of victory for the home side - 68 runs. Australia kept taking wickets at regular intervals despite Martin Guptill going great guns and his threatening 92-run stand with Neesham. Guptill was dropped on 56 and he made the hosts pay with a century but he could not get his team through. Hazlewood was the best bowler taking 3/49 and Marsh, Cummins and Zampa chipped in with a couple each.
