Inn Break
Over and out - That wraps up an entertaining contest, with West Indies Women picking up a crucial two points against Scotland Women. The action in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 now moves to the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton, where New Zealand Women take on Ireland Women in a Group B clash on Friday, 19th June. The first ball is scheduled for 5.30 pm GMT, but do join us a little earlier for all the build-up and pre-match updates. Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!
The victorious skipper of West Indies Women - Hayley Matthews says it is still sinking in after a very close game and admits there were plenty of nerves around, but she is glad that they got over the line. She credits Scotland Women for bowling in the right areas and says both she and the other batters struggled to find different scoring options. Matthews feels Stafanie Taylor made the difference with her classical strokeplay and praises her versatility and experience, especially in a slightly different role. She also notes that it was clear from the first innings that spin was difficult to get away, which is why she wanted her spinners on as early as possible. She reveals that Shemaine Campbelle had been unwell since the morning and was only a 50-50 chance to play, while Deandra Dottin's passion and desire to contribute remain unquestioned despite an unfortunate outing. Looking ahead, Matthews says every World Cup game is hugely important and expects a big challenge against Sri Lanka Women, adding that they will need to perform better than they did in this game.
The captain of Scotland Women - Kathryn Bryce says that they started well but lost their way towards the end. She adds that they were a bit sluggish on their lines and lengths and that is what cost them the game. She reckons that they played good cricket and West Indies Women were smart with their pace off bowling. Bryce mentions that Carter was brilliant and Lister fought well, as they always felt they were in the hunt. Ends by saying that they are excited for their next game against England, and they will give their best.
Let's hear from the captains now...
From early woes to late relief - West Indies Women will be relieved with the result, but their bowling effort was far from perfect. After being taken apart in the first five overs, Hayley Matthews sparked the turnaround with a double strike in the sixth over, before adding another in her next over, while Afy Fletcher chipped in with two wickets as the Windies took control. However, sloppy fielding and a couple of dropped catches allowed Scotland to build a vital partnership and threaten an upset. Just when the game was slipping away, Aaliyah Alleyne's three-wicket burst in the penultimate over swung the momentum back, before Qiana Joseph sealed a hard-fought victory.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Stafanie Taylor wins the award for her crucial knock of 47* off 19 balls. She says that she feels good to be back and she never likes it on the sidelines. She adds that she was going to bat at number 5, but because of the situation, she came in at number 7. Taylor further says that she was targeting a boundary in every over. She reckons that she worked on her technique and that is what helped in improving her batting.
West Indies recover from early trouble - Earlier in the game, West Indies Women looked to be in deep trouble at 85/5. However, a composed 36 off 26 balls from Shemaine Campbelle steadied the ship, and Jahzara Claxton's brisk cameo injected some much-needed momentum. That platform was then brilliantly capitalised on by Stafanie Taylor, who unleashed a late assault, smashing an unbeaten 47 off just 19 deliveries to propel her side to a competitive total. For Scotland Women, Katherine Fraser was the standout bowler with two wickets, while Kirstie Gordon, Rachel Slater and Kathryn Bryce chipped in with one apiece. But conceding 40 runs in the final three overs allowed the momentum to swing firmly in West Indies Women's favour.
Carter's courageous knock goes in vain - Scotland Women made a blazing start, with the openers powering their side to 51 in just five overs. However, the innings unravelled rapidly as they slipped to 58/4 and then 74/5. Darcey Carter, who had set the tone early on, refused to give up. Battling through an injury, she dug deep for a courageous half-century and, alongside Alisa Lister, who smashed 33 off 25, stitched together a crucial 58-run stand that brought the equation down to 22 needed off 12 balls. But with both batters falling in the same over, Scotland's hopes disappeared as they eventually fell 7 runs short.
Windies survive Scottish scare - So close, yet so far for Scotland Women! They pushed the 2016 champions all the way and had West Indies Women under immense pressure, but in the end, the experience of performing on the biggest stage proved decisive. A little more game awareness at key moments and the result might have been different for the Scots. West Indies were far from flawless and looked nervy in the field, but they will breathe a sigh of relief as they secure back-to-back wins and strengthen their push for a semi-final spot.
