Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 246 runs
Right then. Both the skippers get together and pose with the trophy as the series ended in a 1-1 draw. Sri Lanka would be pleased with their effort and end their final home Test game of the year on a high and they have reclaimed their spot in the top three of the ICC World Test Championship points table. They will now shift their attention to the T20 World Cup Group Stage to get their ticket for the main event. They will face Namibia on 16th October. For Pakistan though, they head out to the Netherlands for an ODI series which will begin on the 16th of August. Hope you enjoyed our coverage. Until next time, take care and goodbye!
Dimuth Karunaratane, the skipper of Sri Lanka says his back is still not right and he will get an MRI tomorrow. He says that when Angelo Mathews got out he felt like he had to bat positively and put pressure on Pakistan. He adds that as a team they are playing well and the batters and bowlers are contributing equally. He says there were some mistakes in the past that cost them matches but they try to learn from them and execute their plans better. He praises Prabhath Jayasuriya and says that he knew his potential and that's why Prabath was given the opportunity and flourished with it. He ends by saying that it is a great achievement to play 100 Test matches for Mathews and he has been playing with him since U-15. Adds that he hopes Mathews can play many more matches for Sri Lanka.
Babar Azam, the Pakistani, skipper in for a chat. He starts by saying it was tough for them to win the series. Adds that their batting wasn't up to the mark and that hurt them the most. Mentions that Dhananjaya de Silva's innings was the biggest difference in the game. Also mentions that they will take a lot of positives from this series and hopes to improve their game in the future.
Prabath Jayasuriya is the PLAYER OF THE SERIES for picking up 17 wickets across the two Test matches. He says that he worked hard and was patient for his chance and is happy with his performance. He adds that the surface was not that easy and it was more about the partnership in bowling and waiting for the wickets to fall and then putting more pressure by bowling on the right line and lengths. He ends by saying that he had a lot of support from his family and players and is delighted with the win and will look to continue this form.
Dhananjaya de Silva, who was the acting captain for Sri Lanka for almost all of the Test match, wins the Man of the Match award for his incredible ton. He starts by saying he is really happy after getting a ton after almost 13 innings. Also praises the effort of the boys in all departments. Mentions, he had worked on himself a lot, also there is the added pressure when a batsman doesn't score but he could handle the pressure. Ends by saying that being the stand-in captain is a good challenge for him.
The presentation ceremony...
Early in the game, Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and opted to bat first and his side put on a sizeable score on the back of contributions throughout the batting order. Naseem Shah and Yasir Shah both bowled well with the young pacer showing good control. Then, the Lankan bowling attack led by a five-wicket haul of Ramesh Mendis bundled out the opposition for just 231 runs, handing the hosts a big lead of 147 runs. Only Agha Salman showed some fight as he brought up his maiden half-century. Pakistan did make early inroads in the second innings but soon the bowlers proved to be ineffective and the stand-in captain for Sri Lanka, Dhananjaya de Silva scored a ton to ensure his side had a lead of over 500 runs. Sri Lanka looked in control but when almost the entirety of the final session on Day 4 was called off due to bad light, it seemed that luck was against them. On Day 5 though, it was a completely different story and the hosts ended up winning the match comfortably by 246 runs. Stay tuned for the presentation ceremony.
Pakistan had the lead in the series after an immaculate run chase in the first Test match but their in-form batters have certainly disappointed in the second Test. Both openers were found vulnerable to the conditions and even though Babar Azam played well in the second innings, the first innings deficit made a huge difference in the game. Pakistan started Day 5 on a negative note having lost Imam-ul-Haq early but then the skipper and vice-captain put on a good stand. It was then Rizwan's misjudgment that created the opening for the opposition and the Run-Out of Fawad Alam only made things worse. After Lunch, it got very nervy and the middle order just was driven through as only Yasir Shah got a few boundaries. All in all, a disappointing end for the visitors as they had a great chance of getting an away Test series win and have dropped down to fifth position on the ICC World Test Championship points table.
This has been a memorable comeback from Sri Lanka after going 1-0 down in this two-match Test series. What a turnaround this has been on Day 5 with bad light and dark clouds taking overs off Sri Lanka's hand, but they remained resolute and got the win. After a bit of a sedate first hour on Day 5, Prabath Jayasuriya started to turn the tide in favor of his side. Then Ramesh Mendis joined him and the pair picked up nine wickets in between them with Jayasuriya picking up a fourth five-wicket haul in just three Test matches. In the absence of Dimuth Karunaratne for most of the game, vice-captain Dhananjaya de Silva led the side extremely well and they deserved the win completely. Angelo Mathews also ends his 100th Test match with a win.
What a game of Test cricket we have witnessed! Sri Lanka dominated almost all 5 Days but the game just started to drift away from them late on Day 4 and early on Day 5. Their spinners though have done a remarkable job when it mattered most and the hosts have indeed leveled the series. Pakistan put up a fight but that was only for a short time and they have been outclassed here. With that result, Galle keeps up with its reputation of being a ground where there is a team that ends up on the winning side.

We are back for the afternoon session on Day 5! The umpires and the Sri Lankan players are out in the middle. Babar Azam is set to his resume his stay at the crease and will now be joined by Mohammad Nawaz. Prabath Jayasuriya is all set to complete his unfinished over.
... Day 5, Session 2 ...
Sri Lanka have made a great comeback in this session and surely they would now be aiming to get the remaining wickets as quickly as possible. The hosts need to keep the conditions in mind and need to be on the money in the afternoon session. Ashita Fernando bowled just a few overs but it was mainly their spinner working in tandem and doing the trick for them. Prabath Jayasuriya took a couple of wicket while Mendis got one. Sri Lanka also looked solid in the field and they hardly made any mistakes. Sri Lanka will be itching to get back on the field now with the momentum on their side. Will they be able to end things in the post-Lunch session? To find out, join us at 12.40 pm IST (7.10 am GMT).
The visitors came out with an intention to bat throughtout the day, but they find themselves in a precarious position at Lunch on Day 5. They ended up losing 4 wickets in this morning session. Imam-ul-Haq departed early in the morning although later, Azam and Rizwan managed to stable their innings with a solid stand of 79 runs. Things though started to fall apart once Rizwan departed. Fawad Alam and Agha Salman were sent back cheaply and Babar Azam now holds the key for the visitors. Even he could've been back in the hut, if the review hadn't saved him.
Well, how quickly things change in a Test match. It looked like Pakistan were well in control of their innings, but they've been caught napping in the final 30 minutes of the morning session and without a doubt Sri Lanka will be the happier side going into the break.

Prabath Jayasuriya To Agha Salman OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! Brilliant reflex catch by Kusal Mendis at short leg to send Agha Salman back in the hut. This is tossed up full and on middle, Agha Salman goes down to get inside the line and tries to paddle it away behind square but little did he know that Kusal Mendis already anticipated the shot and started moving to his right before the shot has been played. It is hit firmly but Mendis shows quick reflexes and grabs it with both hands. A huge moment in the game and Sri Lanka are right on top. With that, the umpires have called for LUNCH ON DAY 5.

OUT! RUN OUT! Horrible mix up in the middle and Alam has to go back. This is floated full on middle, Fawad Alam uses his feet and drives it towards mid on and calls for the run straightaway. Prabath Jayasuriya To Mohammad Rizwan OUT!
OUT! Cleaned up! A huge, huge misjudgment from Mohammad Rizwan and he has handed an opportunity to Sri Lanka to get back in the game. Prabath Jayasuriya angles this one in on a nagging length and very close to the off stump. Rizwan strides forward and leaves the ball expecting the turn. The ball though goes straight on with the arm, brushes the off pole and the bail comes off. The keeper pouches the ball and goes up in excitement as he knows what has happened. The umpires go upstairs and the side-on replay shows that the ball just clipped the outside of the off stump. Jayasuriya has done it again for his team.
Is that out? The umpire takes it upstairs to confirm if the ball has his the stumps. The replays confirm that and the big screen shows OUT.

A huge appeal for caught behind but the umpire shows no interest. It is floated and full, outside off, turning away with some bounce. Rizwan looks to cut it late but misses. The ball zips past the bottom edge and Niroshan Dickwella pouches it safely. It looks like the fielders behind might've heard something after looking at the way they were appealing although they don't take the review. The replays later show that there is no bat involved.

A little issue with the ball. It gets stuck in the 8-ball gauge. It looks like the umpires have called for a drinks break which will also allow them to change the ball. So, Sri Lanka did manage to take an early wicket of Imam-ul-Haq this morning. Their spinners are working in tandem trying to make the most of the deck on the final day. Babar Azam could've been back in the dressing room but the review has kept him at the crease. Pakistan will be hoping their current pair remains unscathed till the Lunch break. It is looped up, around off. It grips and turns into the pads. Babar Azam tries to flick it away but misses and gets rapped on the pads. Prabath Jayasuriya appeals and the umpire agrees. RIght on the money! Asitha Fernando serves it on a length, around off. This one stays low off the deck. Imam-ul-Haq tries to block it off his back foot but gets it to the keeper off the toe-end.
The morning session is set to begin. Both the umpire make their way on the field. Followed by Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq who walk out with their blades. Sri Lanka are seen to be in a huddle before they spread out on the field. It will be Asitha Fernando to start with the ball.
PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold says that there is nothing much to report new here as it is still dry. There was overnight rain but the groundstaff has managed to keep it dry, although there are a few scratches. He adds that the batters will feel confident to survive on it as it has slowed down and it will be slightly easier to negotiate spin.
Chris Silverwood, the head coach of Sri Lanka is in for a chat.. He says they cannot predict the weather, but all they though about how quick can they bowl out Pakistan and though accordingly. Mentions, the bowlers need to maintain their lines and lengths. Adds that it is a basic rule but still holds a lot of importance. Says that DDS wanted to score runs and get into his groove and this one was a timely innings under immense pressure. Adds that the side is progressing really well and seems to be on the right track. Ends by syaing it is a real privilege for him to be here in this position.
For Pakistan, the equation is pretty simple, as it would be a bit too much to expect the batters to chase down a steep target in a single day. Pakistan will be aiming to build solid stands in the middle and bat throughout the day to win the series. It won't be an easy task though, against a talented bowling side of Sri Lanka, who impressed in the first innings, and they will be backing themselves to do something similar. Can Sri Lanka pick up early wickets in the morning session? Or will Pakistan remain unscathed till Lunch? Stick around to find out how things pan out.
Hello and a warm welcome to the final day of the second Test match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The hosts have their noses clearly in front in this race, although things surely did not go as they would've envisioned them. They need 9 wickets to level the series.
... Day 5, Session 1 ...
Right then, a lot of overs have been lost on Day 4, around 25 overs in total and that will certainly have a prominent impact on the outcome of the game. The game seems to be heading towards a draw from the offset but Sri Lanka will believe that if they get Babar and Imam early on, then the middle order of Pakistan is quite fragile. Pakistan though will be determined to make use of the help they have been given by the conditions and see the day out. Join us for a riveting final day and the first ball will be bowled at 9.45 am IST (4.15 am GMT). Our build-up though will begin much sooner. Cheers!
Pakistan have been second best throughout this game but what they did in the fourth innings of the previous game has helped them here too. The opposition had to bat for a prolonged period of time because of the mental advantage that Pakistan had and the visitors themselves have so far batted pretty well in the chase. Skipper Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq are the two batters in good nick and they will be feeling if they negotiate the morning session on Day 5 well, they can draw the game and seal the series victory.
Sri Lanka opted not to declare at Lunch and then played for some more time after the interval and this additional time taken in declaration might cost them dearly. The hosts managed to pick up only one wicket in the afternoon session and with just six overs being completed in the final session before the players had to go off, the Lankan bowlers haven't had much of a chance to make inroads before the end of Day 4. It will now require a big effort from their bowlers early on Day 5 to have a chance of getting the win.
Unfortunately, the scenes from the ground show that after bad light stopped play, there was a massive dark cloud hovering over the ground and Stumps have been officially called. Day 4 has provided many twists and turns in the game and whilst the opening session belonged to Sri Lanka, at the moment, a draw looks the likeliest of outcomes. The hosts were cruising early in the day but given what happened in the last game, they had to ensure they got a lead of over 500 runs in order to shut down Pakistan from having a sniff of winning the game but that has backfired.
UPDATE 4.20 pm IST (10.50 am GMT) - Still no official word from the ground. Given play was stopped around this time last evening, Stumps looming large at the moment. And if that happens, then Pakistan will be breathing a huge sigh of relief but the hosts will just get more and more frustrated by it. Stay tuned for further updates.
The two umpires are in a discussion now and the Pakistani batters are already walking towards the pavilion. After the long discussion, the umpires decide that it is time to go off! Pakistan have been aided by bad light and Sri Lanka will be kicking themselves at the moment. For now, the play has been suspended due to bad light. Also, the covers are on too as there is a chance of a shower as well. Stay tuned for further updates.

The groundstaff is standing by! The light has dipped and the covers might come on anytime here now. This is not the sight Sri Lanka would have wanted to see right now. The bionic glasses are out for Kumar Dharmasena and yesterday when the play was stopped, the reading on the light-meter was 5.7 and it is pretty close to that right now as well. We are back for the final session on Day 4! The two umpires are out on the field and so are the Sri Lankan players. Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam are set to resume their stay at the crease. It will be Ramesh Mendis who will start proceedings with the ball after the interval.
... Day 4, Session 3 ...
Pakistan were pretty under-par with the ball in the second innings and even after having half the opposition out for just 117 runs, they failed to grab the opportunity to make inroads in the game. With the bat, so far Pakistan have been decent and have lost just one wicket but given the frailties in their middle order, a lot rides Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam, who has crossed 1000 Test runs as captain as both will be looking to not only make amends for the first innings but get their side safely into Day 5. The final session on Day 4 might prove to be an important one as it will set up the final day nicely. Join us at 3.15 pm IST (9.45 am GMT) to see if the hosts can tighten the screws on the opposition and close in on levelling the series.
Sri Lanka added on quick runs in the afternoon session as both Dhananjaya de Silva and Ramesh Mendis took on the bowlers and took the lead past 500 runs in no time. DDS though was run-out when it looked like there was a declaration coming and after the wicket, it did come. Asitha Fernando bowled well at the start and Sri Lanka produced a couple of half-chances but the pitch still looks decent for batting and the spinners have remained largely ineffective. The marathon man, Prabath Jayasuriya did get an important breakthrough and the hosts will now look to pick up a few more wickets before the end of Day 4.
The post-Lunch session on Day 4 has proved to be pretty even, to be honest, but the hosts are still well and truly on top as the opposition still needs 437 runs to win. Pakistan though have done well to keep the Lankan bowlers at bay for most of the session and are scoring briskly.

Prabath Jayasuriya To Imam-ul-Haq
Beautiful delivery! There is a huge appeal for stumping and the square leg umpire takes it upstairs. It is tossed up, outside off, and holds its line this time. Imam-ul-Haq stride forward to defend it out but does so inside the line. The ball zips past the outside edge. Niroshan Dickwella gathers the ball and is quick to clip the bails off. They appeal and the third umpire comes into play now. The UltraEdge shows no bat is involved. There is a small spike though but it is when the bat brushes the pads. The replays later show that Imam-ul-Haq had his back leg grounded and the final decision is not out.

TAKEN! Oh, wait! It's a no ball! Asitha Fernando has committed the cardinal sin and Abdullah Shafique is left off the hook. This is shorter and on the body, Shafique awkwardly tries to fend it away but ends up playing it uppishly to the right of short leg. The fielder over there shows great reflexes to grab it but it doesn't matter. On watching the replay, the catch too might have not been a clean one but for now Shafique will continue his stay. Well, Asitha Fernando does not have to blame himself, as the replays show that the ball had bouced before going into the palms of short leg fielder. Although, it wasn't a clean replay. It looks like most of it would've come down on the soft signal.
