So it is 2-0 then, for a confident Pakistan against a fairly inexperienced South African side, at least in their bowling, choosing to rest key players ahead of the Test series. Pakistan would be happy with this momentum and aim for a whitewash come Sunday, 22nd December, 2024, when they play the 'Pink ODI' - the final one-dayer of this series, in Johannesburg. The first ball in that game is scheduled to be bowled at 12 pm GMT but our build up will begin way earlier. So do tune in early. Till then, you can catch all the action from the Zimbabwe-Afghanistan series and the West Indies-Bangladesh series. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
MOHAMMAD RIZWAN, the victorious captain of Pakistan, says that it is a team game and everyone chipped in at different stages. Adds that Saim Ayub gave them a good start and then he (Rizwan) and Babar Azam took the match deep, which was the plan. Mentions that Kamran Ghulam played an incredible knock and he always trusted him to come up with the goods, having played with him at Peshawar in domestic cricket. Ends by saying that Pakistan's bowlers were fantastic as well with Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed, all chipping in with wickets.
TEMBA BAVUMA, skipper of South Africa, says that for the first 25 overs with the ball, they had the game under control but in the next 25, they let it slip, conceding more than 200 runs in the latter half, erasing all the good work that they had done earlier. Is firm on his decision to bowl first and says that there was plenty on offer for the bowlers early on. Admits that batting has been letting them down with batters not reaching the three-figure mark. Adds that while it is a positive that batters are getting in, they would want to start converting those starts into hundreds.
Pakistan's KAMRAN GHULAM HAS BEEN ADJUDGED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH, for his blitzkrieg knock of 63 (32). He says that he is happy with his performance and with the series victory as well. Says that the team has been working hard in the last couple of years and the results are showing now.
... THE PRESENTATION ...
Earlier in the day, Pakistan concentrated on keeping wickets in hand and creating a foundation for the end. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan created that platform while Salman Agha and Kamran Ghulam smashed past the 300-mark to get 329 on the board. South Africa did not bowl well towards the end but what would have hurt them badly is that they dropped as many 5 catches in the innings, with 3 coming in the last 6 overs. Please stay tuned for the presentation...
This was a pitch tailor-made for Pakistan from the 90s. Choke the opposition with spin and then kill them with reverse swing. South Africa were trying to claw their way back through the Klassen-Miller stand but Rizwan turned to Shaheen Afridi in the 34th over and he did not disappoint. He struck in the 34th, 36th and 38th overs, removing Miller, Jansen and Phehlukwayo, literally killing the game. He finished with 4 wickets while Naseem Shah took 3. But the real pressure was maintained by Haris Rauf and Abrar Ahmed in the middle overs and not to forget, Salman Agha, though he went for a few towards the end.
A series of starts was the story of this run chase. 5 out of the top 6 got starts, but could not convert them into anything substantial. Perhaps it was the required rate, or perhaps it was the effect of T20 cricket. But unlike Pakistan, the Protea batters were not keen on building a strong base. That led to four wickets falling a bit too quickly and the drama unfolded.
Chasing 330 for victory, the hosts got off to a decent start, reaching 74/1. It was then that spin was introduced and that proved to be their achilles heel. Abrar Ahmed got one to get past Tony de Zorzi and the Proteas got into a shell. After scoring 67/1 in Powerplay 1, they managed just 39/2 in the next 10 overs, visibly cautious. As the visitors sensed a comeback, David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen got together to build a partnership. But because it was a matter of just one wicket, the tourists were confident. The Proteas were 185/4 when Miller was dismissed - and that began their slide. Eventually, it was too much for Klaasen to do, though he tried his best with a valiant 97.
There was a time when T20 used to be called as Pakistan's format. But in this year, it has been ODIs which have been Pakistan's strength. Their batters have enjoyed playing traditional cricket, laying down platforms and bashing towards the end, while the bowlers have rediscovered the art of reverse swing. And when the latter happens, there are very few teams better than Pakistan.
Consistency and Pakistan? Anode and cathode. But not in 2024. Beat Australia 2-1 in Australia. Beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in Zimbabwe. And now, have defeated South Africa in this ODI series. Third consecutive ODI series win and that too, on the road. Have Pakistan turned a corner?

Naseem Shah To Heinrich Klaasen OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! Taken this time. Klaasen cannot get his hundred. A length ball, outside off, Heinrich Klaasen picks it up and looks to pull it out of the ground but cannot quite find the distance again. Maybe, it is the wind on that side. Irfan Khan comes running sideways to his right and takes a good catch. Klaasen is stopped at 97 and PAKISTAN WIN BY 81 RUNS, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in this 3-match ODI series!

Shaheen Afridi To Heinrich Klaasen
DROPPED! Is Heinrich Klaasen destined to get a century tonight? Saim Ayub puts down an absolute sitter. A length ball, outside off, Klaasen swings for the heavens and hits this miles in the air. But he is unable to find the distance and Ayub at deep mid-wicket gets to the ball. Takes the catch, but fumbles. Tries to take it on the second attempt, but puts it down. He is downcast but then suddenly someone screams to throw the ball as the batters look for the second. The fielder has a shy at the bowler's end but misses. Had he hit, this game would have been over!

Shaheen Afridi To Tabraiz Shamsi
On middle and leg, Tabraiz Shamsi looks to flick but almost hits it way too well. The ball is high in the air but does not carry to deep mid-wicket. A single taken.
Tabraiz Shamsi is the last man in, replacing Kwena Maphaka. Obviously, South Africa will rely entirely on Klaasen, but can he get his century at least?

Shaheen Afridi To Kwena Maphaka OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The eagle now has four. On a good length, just outside off, Kwena Maphaka pushes at it. The ball straightens a touch, takes the outside edge and just about carries to the keeper, Mohammad Rizwan. Kwena Maphaka departs for 1 (2) and South Africa are 244/9, needing another 86 from 47 balls.
Will Abrar get another? Not right now. Shaheen Afridi is back on. 7-0-43-3 so far.

Naseem Shah To Bjorn Fortuin OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! Naseem Shah gets his second wicket now! He bowls this full and on middle with pace. Bjorn Fortuin backs away to loft it over extra covers but hits it from the toe end of his bat. The ball goes high up in the air and Babar Azam at extra covers circles around to take a good catch. Bjorn Fortuin falls for 9 off 13 and South Africa still need 87 runs from 49 balls. Pakistan just need two more wickets!

Shaheen Afridi To Andile Phehlukwayo OUT!
OUT! LBW! Well, that is one of the most bizarre events that Afridi would have had in his life. It was a full and fast delivery, around middle and leg and Andile Phehlukwayo tried to jam it back to the bowler. Now, the ball spooned of the face of the bat and went towards the bowler, who plonked it. Now, Afridi has his face in his hands, disappointed that he dropped the catch. But Rizwan was confident that it hit the boot first and went up for the review for LBW. Sure enough. UltraEdge confirmed that the ball hit the boot first and Ball Tracker showed the ball to be crashing into the stumps! Phehlukwayo departs for 1 (6) and South Africa have slipped from 185/4 to 205/7. Another 125 needed from 77 balls. When the ball is reversing, Pakistan are deadly.

OUT! BOWLED! No chance of miscommunication this time! Shaheen Afridi does not need any help. He does it all by himself. Targets the stumps and communicates to the ball that he needs it to face the base. The ball obeys and it goes right under the bat, as Marco Jansen is late in getting his bat down to that yorker. It turns out to be the correct decision as UltraEdge shows a spike when the ball passes the bat. The faintest of edges and Miller has to walk back now. DRINKS BREAK. The equation reads 169 from 120. South Africa have handled the last phase of 10 overs well, scoring 55/1. They got into a shell post Powerplay 1, managing just 39/2 in those 10 overs. As long as Klaasen and Miller are out in the middle, Pakistan will not breathe easily. At the same time, a wicket here and it will increase the pressure ten fold. The required rate is jumping up to 9 an over and while that may not be a problem to Klaasen and Miller in tandem, it might start to become, if one of the two gets dismissed.

Don't think the required rate is an issue for South Africa. They will be happy to chase down 100 in the last 10 overs or say, 60 in the last 5. The issue though, is the resources available. Marco Jansen and Andile Phehlukwayo are the ones slotted to come up next but you don't want them to be needing too much to do.

Ironic as it might seem, South Africa are ahead of Pakistan at this stage. After 26 overs, Pakistan were 121/2, while the Saffas are 19 ahead, but crucially, with 2 extra wickets lost. This was the period when the Babar-Rizwan partnership was going strong and the visitors were mainly concerned in building partnerships, rather than going for boundaries. The Proteas might want to emulate the same. Now then - what's happening out in the middle? Klaasen seems to be complaining something to the umpires. Rizwan is in the action, giving something to the Proteas. The umpires try to calm down the players, with Babar stepping in as well. Spicy stuff!

Abrar Ahmed To Aiden Markram OUT!
OUT! LBW! Abrar Ahmed traps Markram! Playing your shots against spin can always be a double-edged sword. One felt that Markram and Klaasen were comfortable against Salman but against Abrar, they were not so sure. Markram tried to change that perception and has perished. This was flatter, around off and Aiden got across to lap it around the corner. Had he connected, he would have got a boundary. But he did not connect. He got hit on the pads and Pakistan appealed loud and hard. The umpire moved away though. Now, there was a lot of deliberation amongst the fielders whether the impact was outside off and whether the ball was doing too much. Eventually, with four seconds left on the clock, Rizwan took the review. Ball Tracker returned three reds, with the ball hitting the off stump! Aiden Markram departs for 21 (30) and South Africa are 113/4, needing another 217 from 172 balls.
DRS taken. Pakistan have appealed for LBW against Aiden Markram. If no bat, this looks close. Where did this pitch? Nothing on UltraEdge. Now then. Definitely pitched in line as per the replay. Did it bounce enough to save Markram? No, it didn't. Three reds and Markram is a goner!

DRINKS BREAK. It did not seem that way during the innings break, but the pitch has suddenly become difficult to bat upon. The new balls came nicely onto the bat in Powerplay 1 but once they have become older and gone softer, batting has become challenging. Pakistan were not quite at their best with the new balls, but managed to get rid of both the openers. And now, the onset of Abrar Ahmed is pushing the Saffas back, creating doubts in their minds. When a spinner is bowling so well, one way to counter him is to start using one's feet and play some attacking strokes. Do South African batters have the confidence to come down the track or sweep Abrar? Cannot be playing him from the pitch by staying back. Need to come forward and play him off the hand.

One of the chief beauties of spin bowling is when you beat the batter in the air. Abrar Ahmed did that a lot in his previous over and constantly kept varying his speeds. Really, it was watching like a master at work.

Abrar Ahmed To Tony de Zorzi OUT!
OUT! BOWLED'EM! An absolute beauty from Abrar Ahmed! He bowls the googly here, slower through the air, lands on the leg stump line and turns away sharply. Tony de Zorzi prods forward to work it away but gets done in by the flight and plays down the wrong line as well. The ball spins past the outside edge and rattles the stumps. The 40-run stand is broken and the set de Zorzi departs for 34 off 40. South Africa are 74/2 and need another 256 from 228 balls.

Fuller, outside off, Rassie van der Dussen pushes it defensively back to the bowler.
Not quite sure whether it is the heat or has the pitch looked like this always. The track looked a batting beauty at the start of the match but after the first innings, it has started to look abrasive. There were some puffs of dust when the seamers were bowling and if that continues for a while, the spinners could come into action.

Was there a noise? Pakistan feel so and Mohammad Rizwan takes the review for a caught behind. On a good length, outside off, van der Dussen looked to defend from the crease but the ball pitched and then moved away, squaring the batter. Rauf was confident that there was a nick while Rizwan said that he did not hear anything. However, he was coaxed by his bowler and a couple of other fielders inside the circle and he gave in to the review. UltraEdge detects nothing when ball passed the bat. Review lost.

OUT! CAUGHT! The extra bounce gets rid of the South African skipper. A length ball, outside off, Temba Bavuma looked to heave it through the on side but the ball suddenly got big on him.
