Player of the MatchFatima Sana Khan30(20)&2/10(2.5)
Right then, the opening day of the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup has come to an end and we have seen a couple of low totals getting defended very nicely. Next up, the tournament shifts to Dubai with another doubleheader lined up. First up on Friday, 4 October, it will be South Africa Women taking on West Indies Women in a Group B encounter beginning at 10 am GMT. This will be followed by a Group A game between India Women and New Zealand Women at 2 pm GMT. Both games will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai and you can join us an hour in advance for the build-up of both those games. Until then, take care and goodbye!
Fatima Sana Khan, the skipper of Pakistan Women now reflects on the match and starts off by thanking the Almighty for their first win in this World Cup. She continues that they won the toss but failed to score maximum runs on the board, which they will certainly work on and come back as a better team. She states that she was a bit worried as Baig was injured. Further adds that she very well knows that she is an important asset for the team but she kept her nerves and bowled well under pressure. Ends up saying they got their momentum and they would love to carry this further.
Chamari Athapaththu, the captain of Sri Lanka Women begins by congratulating the Pakistan Women skipper, Fatima Sana Khan. Says she is a young captain who played good cricket overall. Adds that they struggled to chase 120 which is disappointing and need to adapt according to these conditions. Ends by saying that it is all about the approach and they are looking forward to the contest against Australia.
Fatima Sana Khan wins the Player of the Match for her excellent all-round showing. She starts by thanking her teammates and the management for her performance. She continues that she tried to be calm and backed herself when things were not turning well for her team. She ends up saying that they wanted an early wicket and since then their plan started working.
The Presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, Pakistan Women won the toss and Fatima Sana Khan opted to bat first as conditions were warm and there didn't seem to be much dew either. Pakistan hobbled their way to 116 runs thanks to a couple of handy knocks from Nida Dar and the skipper herself. Sri Lanka Women put on a solid performance with the ball as three bowlers picked up three wickets each and their skipper was also in the thick of things. However, in the second half of the game, the bowlers kept on ruling the roost and the Lankan batters fell well short of the target.
Pakistan Women had a defendable total on board but by no means a big one and just after one delivery, they lost their premier pacer, Diana Baig as she hobbled off the pitch, exaggerating a previous calf injury. This forced captain Fatima Sana Khan to employ herself and she got the big wicket of the opposing keeper. The spinners then weaved a web with Omaima Sohail leading the charge and then the others came into play as well. Sadia Iqbal picked up three wickets in the latter stages of the game as Omaima, Fatima and Nashra Sundhu all finished with a couple each. They will be disappointed to put down a lot of catches which might not turn out to be as forgiving as it did in this game.
Sri Lanka Women might have been one of the most improved and in-form sides coming into this T20 World Cup but this game has been a reflection of their shortcomings with that bat which was quite common a while ago. They used to depend heavily on skipper Chamari Athapaththu but that seemed to have changed in recent times. However, once Athapathu departed early in the chase, they couldn't quite fill her boots. Vishmi Gunarathne tried to play and anchor innings but kept running out of partners and it was only Nilakshika Silva who showed some fight as she employed the sweep shot pretty effectively.
What a turnaround in fortunes for both sides and Pakistan Women might have just turned a huge corner here. They had a poor record in recent times after the retirement of their talismanic skipper, Bismah Maroof and had lost the last three T20I games against Sri Lanka Women as well. However, they have been able to pull together as a team and start their campaign with a win.

Pakistan Women win by 31 runs and kick off their campaign with a valiant fight and get those two vital points on the board.

Fatima Sana Khan To Sachini Nisansala OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Fatima Sana Khan takes all the pace off from the ball and it is dipping on the batter outside off, Nisansala premeditates to play a reverse ramp but ends up getting the major connection from the outer half of her willow to the keeper. The ball dips low due to lack of pace and a regulation catch practice for Muneeba Ali behind the sticks as she dives forward to her left. Pakistan Women are just a solitary wicket away from an emphatic win.

Sadia Iqbal To Sugandika Kumari OUT!
OUT! SADIA IQBAL ON A HAT TRICK! Although a review was taken by Sugandika Kumari against the on-field decision, but all in vain! Fractionally fuller one, and Sadia keeps the attack on the stumps, Sugandika Kumari misses her sweep, plays all over the line of the ball and wears it on the front pad. It looks quite plumb in front though. Nothing on UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows three reds and the verdict remains OUT. SADIA IQBAL IS ON A HAT TRICK.
Sugandika Kumari is in next.

Sadia Iqbal To Nilakshika Silva OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! Easy catch! Sadia Iqbal bowls a tossed-up delivery outside off, and it grips once again and turns in a bit. Nilakshika Silva shuffles in for a big sweep but ends up getting a top edge on it. It flies up off the top edge towards Sana at short fine who takes an easy catch. Wickets have come in a procession throughout the day which strongly proves that batting hasn't been easy on this slow track at all. Nilakshika Silva departs on 22 (25) and Sri Lanka Women are 81/7 in 18.2 overs. Pakistan Women are just three wickets away from a historic win.

Sadia Iqbal To Sachini Nisansala
An appeal for LBW, but the umpire denies! Pakistan Women do challenge the on-field decision and go upstairs. This is a fuller-length delivery drifting on the off stump line, Silva premeditates the reverse sweep and goes through the shot. The ball though grips and turns in a long way off the deck and beats Silva in the shot. It pings her front pad. UltraEdge shows nothing and the Ball Tracking confirms that the impact is outside off on the projection. NOT OUT and a leg bye taken.
Pakistan Women have gone upstairs for a LBW decision. It was given Not Out on-field. The third umpire is called in and there's no bat involved on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows that the impact is well outside the line as well. It stays NOT OUT.

OUT! CAUGHT! Nashra Sundhu gets back-to-back wickets in her consecutive overs! Things are falling apart for the Lankan Women! Nashra Sundhu keeps her line tight and simple just like she has been doing and gets the benefit out of it. She bowls fuller and pushes it outside off, on the fifth stump. Vishmi Gunarathne crouches down to hoist it over the long off region but she fails to provide the maximum strength on it. She gets a good elevation but not the desired distance as the ball hangs in the night sky and travels straight towards the fielder at long off and that's a simple catch for Sidra Amin to take.

A lot of confusion in the middle. Nilakshika Silva has been adjudged LBW on-field but she has opted for the review. The third umpire is called in and she checks the replays before moving on to UltraEdge. However, there is information that the batter was distracted and the ball is considered a 'dead ball.' The reason for this was that Nashra Sundhu's towel fell just as she delivered the ball and according to the rules, it is a dead ball and Silva survives. Sundhu will have to re-bowl that one.

Omaima Sohail keeps the attack on the line of the stumps providing a lot of revolutions on the ball, pitches it around off and middle, on a fuller length and turns a bit away. Hasini Perera gets drawn forward in the flight and tries to push it across but the ball lands and grips and turns enough to beat the edge of her bat. It disturbs the furniture and Hasini Perera is left shell-shocked as she is totally outfoxed on this one.

Omaima Sohail To Harshitha Madhavi OUT!
OUT! YOU MISS, I HIT! BOWLED'EM! Pakistan Women are really not in the mood to give up on this total and the fight is on now as Harshitha Madhavi departs cheaply! Omaima Sohail bowls from around the pegs and this one comes on with the arm, a flighted one that pitches around off and straightens off the pitch and stays a bit low on the bounce as well. Harshitha Madhavi is cramped up for room with her feet not going anywhere. She looks to play across but ends up playing all over and the ball crashes into the middle and off stumps.

A proper throw would have been very close there! Full and on off, Harshitha Madhavi lunges ahead and shovels it to the left of the cover fielder and straightaway calls for a single. Vishmi Gunarathne though, had to put the afterburners to reach to the striker's end. However, the fielder there was a bit late to pick, and also the throw was a bit wide. A nervy single though.

OUT! CAUGHT! In the air and taken! Fatima Sana Khan dishes out a full and wide one, angling it across the left-hander. Halt! Oopsie! Diana Baig has just tweaked her feet and aborted her run-up. She is limping on one leg and struggling to walk. More problems for Pakistan Women! Looks like it's an issue with her calf on the right leg which is being strapped by the physio. Those strains on the calf can be extremely painful. Oh, no! She is in tears and cannot continue anymore and is walking off the field. Two of the reserve players on her side are shouldering her to the dugout as she is hobbling on the walk. It will be Fatima Sana Khan who will continue the over in place of Diana.
