Inn Break
Well, we have lift off in the 2026 Women’s Premier League, and what a night it was to set the tone for the season ahead. If the opening game is anything to go by, we are in for an absolute cracker of a tournament. Saturday, 10th January brings a double dose of action with the first of two double headers this season. First up, Gujarat Giants take on UP Warriorz at 3 pm IST (9.30 am GMT). Later in the evening, at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), the Mumbai Indians return to action as they square off against the Delhi Capitals. We look forward to your company right from the build-up. See you then. Cheers!
RCB's Nadine De Klerk is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for her match-winning and unbeaten knock of 63 off 44 balls and she also picked up an outstanding 4-wicket haul with the ball with figures of 4-0-26-4. On her knock, she says it is probably going to take a bit to sink in, but she feels great that they got over the line. Says it is important to understand that if it's your day, then you just need to cash in. Feels lucky to get a few chances her way. On being asked about her bowling, she mentions it is just about coming in and backing your skills and executing. Appreciates the way Bell and Reddy bowled in the Powerplay. Admits that she was a bit frustrated that she didn't hit it cleanly initially. Says cricket is a funny game and you just need to stay in the fight. Details that on these grounds, you just need to cash in. She says that towards the backend, she was probably thinking about taking the bulk of the strike. She also highlights that there were a few crucial partnerships, which made things easier for her. Going into the final over, she says her intention was to keep most of the strike and try to win the game for the team.
The captain of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Smriti Mandhana says a thriller is a perfect way to start the season and adds that RCB are known for producing such games. Mandhana also highlights how positive the group remained even when things weren’t going their way. She feels the preparation coming into the tournament has been really good, with everyone looking sharp and ready. Praises Nadine de Klerk, saying that she did all the hard work with both bat and ball to get the team over the line. Says that we saw it in Visakhapatnam during the World Cup when de Klerk did it against India, and it was a very similar situation. Mentions that when Nadine was dropped, they were hoping she would go on to score runs just like Sajeevan Sajana did for MI after being dropped twice.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Grace Harris is the next one to have a quick chat. Starts by saying it's just outstanding what they have seen from De Klerk, cheekily calling her 'noodles'. Mentions that she has been working very hard on that finishing role and feels glad to see her executing it when it mattered. Calls De Klerk a class player and that she has seriously improved in the last year and a half. About the emotions in the dugout during that last over, she shares that when De Klerk hit that six over cover, they began to believe that they were still in the game. Says their heart rate was calm all day, but spiked towards the end. Admits that the shots they played throughout the innings were not very intelligent, and stresses the need of rethinking about how they will approach a sliding surface. She says she had imagined playing a similar kind of innings herself, so it was great to see her teammate pull it off. She also notes that the group is in a good space and says it has been great to get over here and come together as a team.
Mumbai Indians' captain Harmanpreet Kaur reflects on the defeat. Starts by admitting that they were aware of De Klerk’s ability to score runs in the final over, but failed to execute one good delivery when it mattered most. She says those fine margins can be decisive at this level. Harmanpreet also concedes that De Klerk was given a couple of chances in the field and made them pay for it in the end, adding that if you keep offering opportunities like that, players of her quality will come at you hard. Kaur further adds that they were in the game for the most part and did everything that was needed to win this match, except for the last over. Details that they know if they keep thinking about this, it is not going to help them in their next game. Stresses on learning from this game and think about how they can do better in the next one. Admits that they didn't have a good Powerplay while batting, but is hopeful that they will improve on it. Shares that it wasn't easy initially to bat on this pitch, but details that it got better and better as the ball got older. Is hopeful that they will use the conditions better in their next game against DC.
After opting to bowl first, Lauren Bell made the new ball hoop around for RCB and had Amelia Kerr in all sorts of trouble early on. G Kamalini managed to find a few boundaries and put together a partnership with Harmanpreet Kaur, but both fell in quick succession. From there, Sajeevan Sajana and Nicola Carey steadied the innings with a vital 82-run stand, with Sajana taking on the aggressor’s role to push the scoring along and cashing in on the two early reprieves she got in her innings. Looking back at the 20th over, De Klerk conceded just five runs to limit Mumbai to 154, and just how crucial that turned out to be was evident in the end.
Two wickets in quick succession pegged Royal Challengers Bengaluru back, but credit to Prema Rawat, who came through at a crucial moment. She faced just 4 deliveries, but provided valuable support and allowed Nadine to work her magic. For the Mumbai Indians, Nicola Carey bounced back strongly after an expensive first over, while Amelia Kerr made up for her struggles with the bat through her bowling brilliance. Shabnim Ismail also impressed with the ball. Had the run-out chance and the catch in the 19th over been taken, the game might well have been sealed right there.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru opted to stack up their bowling resources, which left them a little light on the batting front. That made a solid start imperative, and they delivered more than that with Grace Harris racing out of the blocks with a quick start. At 40/0 after three overs, RCB looked well on their way, but one opening was all the Mumbai Indians needed. The momentum swung quickly, and Bengaluru slipped to 65/5. Nadine De Klerk and Arundhati Reddy then came together to steady the chase with a crucial 52-run partnership. After the stumble, the responsibility fell largely on De Klerk, given her ability to clear the fence and close out the game under pressure.
NADINE'S NIGHT IN NAVI MUMBAI. Nadine de Klerk comes up clutch for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in an absolute cracker. Missed chances in the field came back to haunt the defending champions as Nadine pulled off a stunning heist for the 2024 champions. The last couple of overs summed up the night Natalie Sciver-Brunt had in the field, a dropped catch earlier, followed by an inability to defend 17 runs in the final over.

FOUR! TAKE A BOW, NADINE DE KLERK! Or shall we say, Nadine De Klutch? A fightback for the ages. She keeps raising her stocks high with the bat again and again. The RCB players steam out of the dugout and are up and about as one. Nat Sciver-Brunt misses the yorker by a fraction and slips in a fuller ball, on the stumps. Nadine De Klerk opens up the off side by shuffling outside leg and crunches it over the bowler for a boundary down the ground. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru have stunned the defending champions as they win by 3 wickets.
Harmanpreet Kaur is having a long conversation with Nat Sciver-Brunt. Nadine De Klerk is made to wait.

ABSOLUTE DRAMA AT DY PATIL! Good length outside off stump. Nadine De Klerk swings hard across the line and gets a top edge that balloons to the right of deep mid-wicket. Amelia Kerr runs across from deep mid-wicket, slides in but spills the catch, perhaps distracted by the other fielder charging in from deep square leg. The backing-up fielder, Amanjot Kaur gathers the ball quickly and fires it back towards the keeper’s end as Nadine De Klerk rushes for the second run. But, G Kamalini has to hop a bit to collect it and whips the bails off. The third umpire is called into action. The replays show that G Kamalini didn't collect the ball in her gloves and broke the stumps without having the ball in her hand.
Complete chaos! A catch has gone down, but have MI managed to execute the run out? G Kamalini does not look sure. Did she have the ball in her mitts whilst breaking the stumps? Well, she lost control of the ball and it fell to the ground. Both bails came off without Kamalini having the ball in her gloves. Nadine De Klerk survives.

Nicola Carey To Shreyanka Patil OUT!
OUT! BOWLED! Two wickets in the over for Nicola Carey. Nicola spears in a pinpoint yorker, on the off stump line. It lands and goes straight on to beat the inside out shot attempted by Shreyanka. The ball beats the outside edge and smashes into the off pole. Hang on! The umpire wants to confirm whether the ball has crashed into the stumps or have the bails been knocked off by G Kamalini's gloves. The replay rolls in and confirms that Kamalini's gloves were well behind the stumps when the bails were lit. Shreyanka Patil falls for 1 (2), and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are 121/7, needing 34 runs off 18 balls.
Gone? The stumps have lit up. G Kamalini is standing up to the sticks. Did the ball clip the stumps, or was it the gloves? It was the former. OUT!

Nicola Carey To Arundhati Reddy OUT!
OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Reddy couldn't have picked out the fielder any better. Nicola slips in a dipping full toss, on middle and leg. Reddy gets down on a knee and tries to slog it over deep mid-wicket, but mistimes it straight into the safe hands of Amelia Kerr stationed in the deep. The 52-run partnership is broken now as Arundhati Reddy departs on 20 off 25. RCB are 117/6, chasing 155.
STRATEGIC BREAK! The game is beautifully poised, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru needing 38 runs from 24 balls. Their innings has followed a pattern similar to that of the Mumbai Indians earlier. Nadine De Klerk and Arundhati Reddy are now playing the role that Sajeevan Sajana and Nicola Carey did for MI. Amelia Kerr has bowled out, while Shabnim Ismail and Nicola Carey have one over left, and those two overs will be crucial. For RCB, a lot rests on the shoulders of De Klerk.

STRATEGIC BREAK! Time for everyone to catch their breath after an action-packed first nine overs of the RCB chase. It was a flying start at 40/0 after three overs, but the momentum has swung sharply since, with Bengaluru losing 5 wickets for 32 runs in the next five. The early intent from Grace Harris ensured they stayed ahead of the required rate, but it’s the loss of wickets that has hurt them. There is still batting to come from Shreyanka Patil and Prema Rawat, and this partnership will need to take the game deep. The Mumbai Indians didn’t start well but have stormed back into the contest. Just one over of spin so far has already paid dividends, with Amelia Kerr striking twice. Expect spin from both ends soon, with Saika Ishaque yet to be introduced. She will be a handy option with two right-handers at the crease.

FOUR! A brilliant effort by Khemnar, but in vain! A length-delivery, outside off, nipping away. Reddy stands tall and square cuts it to the deep backward point region. Poonam Khemnar sprints across to her left from deep cover and tries to cut it off with the dive, but seems to have made contact with the boundary ropes while the ball is in her hand. The third umpire is brought into action and after several angles, it is deemed a boundary. 10/10 for the effort though.

Amelia Kerr To Richa Ghosh OUT!
OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! It is all falling apart for RCB now. Excellent catch by Nicola Carey in the deep. She has made it look so easy. Kerr drops a full ball, a conventional leg break, keeping it just outside off. Richa Ghosh tries to feast on it by smoking it inside out extra cover, but loses her shape while trying to hit it too hard. The ball is aired off the toe end. Nicola Carey from long off, runs to her left and times her leap to perfection at long off, while also judging the ball's trajectory nicely. Plucks the catch while being airborne to send Ghosh packing. Richa Ghosh perishes on a run-a-ball 6. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are 65/5, chasing 155.

Amelia Kerr To Radha Yadav OUT!
OUT! OUTFOXED! A magical delivery from the Kiwi leggie upon her introduction into the attack and Smriti's face says it all in the RCB dugout. Amelia dishes out a deceptive googly and lands it on a fuller length. It pitches and grips into the batter, around middle and leg. Radha Yadav is sucked into the defensive shot and pushes at it, but plays all over the wrong line, getting beaten on the inside edge. Hears the death-rattle behind her. Radha Yadav departs on 1 (2) and from 47/1, RCB have slipped down to 63/4.

Amanjot Kaur To Dayalan Hemalatha OUT!
OUT! LBW! Amanjot Kaur strikes in her first over and the Mumbai Indians are gradually clawing their way back in the contest. A length ball on middle stump, nips in off the pitch. Hemalatha shuffles across but misses a straight one, as she aims for a flick and ends up being trapped in front. Kaur and MI go up in appeal as one, and an easy call for the umpire. Hemalatha wisely decides against a review. Dayalan Hemalatha falls for 7 off 12 and RCB are 62/3, chasing 155.

In the air... but lands just short is the third umpire's verdict! A full delivery angling into the leg stump. Hemalatha tries a flick towards mid-wicket but doesn’t get it cleanly. Carey dives forward and snares it, but the ball appears to have bounced first. The third umpire is summoned to check the legality of the catch. Carey, going by her body language, isn't so sure either. The replays confirm that Carey picked it up on the half-volley.
Did that carry? Nicola Carey is not sure. The third umpire is called into action. The side-on angle clearly shows that the ball bounced in front before going to hand. NOT OUT!

CHIPPED AND DROPPED! Touch full from Shabnim Ismail on middle, nipping in a touch. Richa Ghosh chips it off the toe end to the right of mid on, where Saika Ishaque moves and dives to her non-dominant side to take a low catch, but shells it as the ball hits her palm and goes down. It rolls away for a single. Richa gets a big lifeline early in her innings. How costly would that prove for MI? Only time will tell.

FOUR BYES! Loose from Shabnim and the keeper both! Ismail slips in a length ball and slides miles down leg, Dayalan Hemalatha misses her flick and the keeper, G Kamalini fails to gather it cleanly to her left and lets it through to the deep fine leg fence.
Both the RCB openers are back in the hut now. And dear me! It looks like Shabnim Ismail has hurt her ankle in the process of taking the catch in the deep. Maybe just tweaked her leg on a greasy outfield. She is down on the ground and is receiving some treatment via an ice pack. Some concerned MI players circle around her, but eventually, Shabnim gets back on her feet. Richa Ghosh is in at number 4.

OUT! TAKEN! Would you believe it? Mid on was just pushed back before this ball, and Grace Harris has hit it straight down her throat. Sciver-Brunt takes pace off and serves it full, on middle. Harris swings well in front of her body as she looks to go down the ground. She fails to pick the slower one and is early into the shot. Nearly sneaked through! Speared in, very full, attacking the front pad. Hemalatha gets her bat down and ekes out an inside edge down to deep fine leg for a single. End of a successful over for MI. Can they build on it?
Mumbai Indians needed that breakthrough desperately. It was actually a good setup by Ismail. The field was packed on the off side and she bowled accordingly, so Mandhana tried to hack it over the leg side and paid the price for it. Dayalan Hemalatha walks in at number 3 now.

Shabnim Ismail To Smriti Mandhana OUT!
OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Four dots in a row and Smriti Mandhana feels the need to make a move. She perishes in doing so. Cross-seam delivery, bowled into the surface, angling across from over the wicket, Mandhana takes a couple of steps down the track and has a hoick across the line.
