Inn Break
Over and out - We wrap things up here, with the Delhi Capitals getting the better of the Lucknow Super Giants to close out the opening round of IPL 2026. The tournament rolls on with a high-octane clash next, as Sunrisers Hyderabad face Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, April 2. The first ball will be bowled at 2 pm GMT (7.30 pm IST), with the build-up coming your way well in advance. Until next time, goodbye!
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Sameer Rizvi wins the award for his match-winning 70* off 47. Rizvi says the management has backed him to bat at number 4 and express himself, and he looked to do exactly that tonight. Sameer mentions that his familiarity with conditions in Lucknow helped, and that he aimed to bat with a positive approach in the powerplay. However, after a couple of early wickets, he and Tristan Stubbs spoke about taking their time. Rizvi shares that once set, they looked to play their natural game through to the end and focused on putting the bad balls away, especially with conditions being challenging for batters.
The bowlers executed well - Axar Patel, the victorious skipper of the Delhi Capitals, jokingly says that the match got finished early. He admits that it got a bit close in the middle, but they knew they just needed one partnership to seal the game. Patel mentions that he is very happy with the bowling performance. They realised that the ball was swinging and they had good communication between the bowlers who executed their plans well. Patel shares that Sameer Rizvi was always going to play. They also have a good option in Ashutosh Sharma. Ends by saying that Rizvi works very hard in the nets, and he is very happy with his performance.
Presentation time ...
Let's hear from Tristan Stubbs - Stubbs says he wasn’t even fully padded up when he had to walk in, but it was pretty clear what the job was, which was to spend time at the crease and bat sensibly. He praises Sameer Rizvi’s innings, calling it magnificent, and notes that the wicket had a bit in it early on with some swing and nip. Tristan highlights that Rizvi takes on spin naturally, which made things easier for him, and all he had to do was just rotate the strike. Mentions that they knew one good over could change the equation, and once that came, it became a run-a-ball chase. Stubbs tells that there wasn’t a specific plan to take on Shahbaz Ahamad, but the talk between him and Rizvi was about assessing whether the ball was spinning. Adds that the first 3 balls went for 12, and it all worked out for them. On his role, Tristan says he enjoys batting at number 6, adding that the situation usually dictates what needs to be done, and he can take the team over the line.
Proud of the fight shown with the ball - The skipper of the Lucknow Super Giants, Rishabh Pant says that the best way to deal with his runout is to forget about it, adding that it’s something you can’t control and dwelling on it only puts you on the back foot. Pant explains that given the way they batted, they need a player who can contribute with both bat and ball, which is why Shahbaz Ahmed came in as the impact sub. He adds that the role for Ayush Badoni is clearly defined, especially when they lose early wickets, with Badoni expected to step in and stabilise. Rishabh shares that the way the team fought with the ball was one of the positives of the game. Admits that extras hurt, especially when defending a low total, as there is a tendency to try a bit too much. When asked why they moved away from the Marsh-Markram opening pair, he shares that they wanted to explore the left-right combination up top. He further says it is a 50-50 call whether he continues to open, but indicates that he will remain in the top order.
Strong start goes in vain - Lucknow can take plenty of positives from their bowling effort, especially the way they came out firing in the Powerplay. Mohammad Shami struck off the very first ball, while Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav chipped in as well to reduce DC to 26/4 and put them firmly on the back foot. However, they couldn’t build on that early momentum and failed to create enough opportunities as the innings progressed. In their eagerness to push harder, they ended up conceding too many extras, 20 in total, including 16 wides, which proved costly in a low-scoring game. Anrich Nortje couldn’t quite make the impact they were hoping for and was expensive, while the 2.1 overs from the spinners went for 35 runs, allowing the momentum to shift decisively in favour of the Capitals.
Batting woes sink LSG - Earlier in the game, LSG posted what looked like a below-par total, never quite managing to stitch together any meaningful partnerships. The top order failed to make an impact, with only Marsh’s 35 offering some resistance, while Abdul Samad chipped in with a valuable 36 to push them past the 140 mark. Beyond that, it was a disappointing outing with the bat, lacking both momentum and stability. For DC, T Natarajan was the standout performer with the ball, claiming an impressive three-fer, while Lungi Ngidi also had three wickets to his name. Kuldeep and Axar complemented the effort well, sharing three wickets between them to keep LSG firmly in check.
Capitals recover to clinch it - Delhi Capitals were rocked early, losing Rahul for a golden duck off the very first ball, and things only got worse as they found themselves reeling at 33/4 at the end of the Powerplay. In a spot of real trouble, they turned to Sameer Rizvi as the Impact Sub, and he made the biggest difference in the game. With the chase needing stability, Rizvi, alongside Stubbs, stitched together a crucial partnership, blending caution with calculated aggression. With the pressure of a low target not weighing too heavily, the pair rotated the strike smartly, punished the loose deliveries, and never allowed LSG to claw their way back. The duo added 119 runs off 76 balls, with Rizvi bringing up a fantastic half-century, staying unbeaten on 70 off just 47 as Delhi eventually chased it down with 17 balls to spare.
Calm heads see DC through - Delhi Capitals kick off their campaign with a hard-fought win, making it five wins in a row against LSG. At the halfway stage, it looked like it would be a comfortable chase, but Delhi were made to work hard after early setbacks. Sameer Rizvi was at the heart of the victory, while Stubbs' calm presence proved crucial in guiding them over the line. Credit to Lucknow Super Giants for making their opponents earn every run, but in the end, they just didn’t have enough on the board.

Abdul Samad To Sameer Rizvi
SIX! Fittingly, Sameer Rizvi hits the winning runs. A coming-of-age innings from the young Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs is delighted at the other end as the two share a hug. DC hunt down 142 with 6 wickets in hand and 17 balls to spare. Abdul Samad drops it short, on middle. Sameer has all the time in the world to rock back, and he pulls it with disdain over deep mid-wicket for a six to finish the game off.
Delhi Capitals are just one hit away from the win now. Here is Abdul Samad to bowl.

Strategic Break! Talk about making an impact as an Impact Sub, and Sameer Rizvi is doing just that. He will want to see this through himself and not leave it to those waiting in the dugout. DC will be breathing easier thanks to this partnership. LSG have really felt the absence of a penetrative 5th bowling option, but they will still believe. A wicket immediately after the break, and another in quick succession, could just open things up. Anrich Nortje returns to the attack.

Strategic Break! Lucknow Super Giants dominated the Powerplay, picking up four wickets, but they cannot let DC build any significant partnership as they are defending a low total here. The only way for them to win this game is by bowling out their opponents. Delhi, on the other hand, need a calm presence out in the middle. Stubbs is trying to absorb the pressure, while Rizvi has been a bit aggressive. Remember, they still have David Miller to come, and he could just be the perfect man for this situation. Here is Mohammad Shami to bowl out after the break.

Prince Yadav To Axar Patel OUT!
OUT! BOWLED'EM! Prince Yadav, you beauty! He runs from over the wicket, serves this full and on middle, gets it to nip back in sharply. Axar Patel gets stuck in his crease and tries to flick it away, but gets beaten on the inside edge by the inward movement and the pace as well. The ball goes through, brushes the back pad before rattling the stumps behind. Axar has a look at the surface, but there was very little he could have done about that one.

A bit of a nothing shot from Rana. The express pace and the areas LSG's quicks have hit so far seem to have planted a seed of doubt in the minds of the DC batters. The Capitals use their Impact Sub, with Sameer Rizvi coming in at number 4. T Natarajan has been subbed out.

OUT! TAKEN! Dream start for Mohammad Shami in LSG colours. He goes fuller and just outside off, getting it to shape away as well. KL Rahul chases it and has an almighty swoosh at it.
