DRINKS! It has been an excellent phase of play for the visitors as they have added runs at a quick pace and without losing any wickets in this session. Tom Blundell has looked really solid and so has Rachin Ravindra and both these batters are now looking to up the ante and are being very successful to this point. Ireland needs to break this partnership as soon as they can, else they'll be chasing shadows. Thomas Mayes has been called into action again.

Rachin stood firm - Despite the quick double-blow, Rachin Ravindra stood firm and found an able partner in Tom Blundell. The duo absorbed the pressure well and ensured there were no further setbacks before the break. Thanks to their resilience, New Zealand managed to cross the 100-run mark, ending the opening session at 104/4. Ireland clearly took the honors in this session, and the game hangs beautifully poised. Can the hosts dominate the second session as well? Or will the Kiwis fight back? Join us at 1.10 pm GMT post the Lunch Break to find out...
The recovery from the Kiwis - With the visitors in deep trouble, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra joined hands to steady the ship. The duo showed immense composure and stitched together a crucial 64-run partnership for the third wicket. Just when New Zealand looked to be recovering, Liam McCarthy stepped up for Ireland. He broke the dangerous stand by taking the wicket of Williamson, and Adair again followed it up quickly by dismissing Daryl Mitchell, leaving the Kiwis reeling at 84/4.
A session that belonged to Ireland - Ireland made a dream start to this 4-day Test match. After opting to bowl first, their bowlers came out firing on all cylinders. Spearheading the attack, Mark Adair struck gold in the very first over, dismissing Kiwi skipper Tom Latham for a duck. Adair didn't stop there. He soon removed Devon Conway for just 4 runs, leaving the New Zealand opening pair shattered early on.

FOUR LEG BYES! Runs straightaway to get us underway. Mark starts around the stumps to Tom Latham and errs in line as he bowls it down his leg side. Tom Latham misses out on the flick and clips this off his pads for a boundary towards the fine leg region.
We are all set for this historic Test to get underway. The umpires have made their way out in the middle followed by the players of Ireland. The opening pair for New Zealand is out as well with Devon Conway and Tom Latham walking out with the bat for NZ. Mark Adair will take the new ball for Ireland.
The teams take the field for the pre-match ceremonies as the national anthems prepare to play. New Zealand's anthem sounds first, followed immediately by Ireland's anthem to wrap up the pre-game formalities.
PITCH REPORT ON DAY 1 - Isobel Joyce is pitchside and she says the weather is absolutely incredible today with temperatures hovering comfortably in the mid-20s, which means the 22-yard strip is a really good surface for cricket. Joyce notes that it feels nice and firm and the conditions are pretty even all the way around. Looking closely at the surface, Joyce points out that there is virtually no movement or structural cracks to worry about, and while there are a couple of very minor imperfections. Joyce does not expect them to affect how the ball behaves and she adds that the track offers much better, truer carry than is usually seen at this venue, which she calls a fantastic sign for this time of year.
The skipper of New Zealand - Tom Latham expresses happiness after getting his wish to bat first on a dry, high-quality surface boosted by a week of great weather. Since the NZ team last played a Test match in Tasmania, Latham notes that finding their rhythm quickly is their main goal before the series against England. Tom informs that Dean Foxcroft is making his debut as the team opts for a four-man pace attack.
The skipper of Ireland - Andrew Balbirnie acknowledges the honor of playing Test cricket against world-class teams and says that while Ireland have played good cricket in past matches, they must now focus on playing well for longer stretches. Balbirnie informs about the team changes by highlighting that families are present to watch their three debutants, Reuben Wilson, Liam McCarthy, and Thomas Mayes, who lead a three-man pace attack.
New Zealand (Playing XI) - Tom Latham (C), Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (WK), Dean Foxcroft, Nathan Smith, Zakary Foulkes, Blair Tickner and Ben Sears.
Ireland (Playing XI) - Andy Balbirnie (C), Stephen Doheny, Cade Carmichael, Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, Lorcan Tucker (WK), Mark Adair, Andy McBrine, Thomas Mayes, Reuben Wilson and Liam McCarthy.
TOSS - Ireland have won the coin flip and they have elected to BOWL first.
An exciting battle ahead - This unique match sets up a classic story of New Zealand's seasoned expertise against a depleted but fiercely proud Irish squad. It acts as a direct, real-world test to see if four-day cricket can still deliver the late-game drama, tension, and strategy of a five-day match. This special encounter promises to give fans a truly compelling narrative. It beautifully balances intense, hard-fought international competition with a live experiment that could change the very structure and future of Test cricket forever.
Brave new faces meet tough times - The home team faces an uphill battle as they step onto the field to meet one of the best teams in the world. Ireland is dealing with a severe wave of sudden injuries that has forced senior professionals like Paul Stirling out of action. Despite these massive setbacks, captain Andy Balbirnie leads a highly determined and hopeful side that includes several exciting, uncapped players ready to make their names known. To survive the bowling attack of New Zealand, Ireland will have to rely heavily on the steady bats of Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker to anchor their innings and fight for runs.
Black Caps prep for the English summer - New Zealand enters this historic match under the calm leadership of captain Tom Latham. The team views this unique game as the absolute perfect warm-up opportunity before they head off for their major, highly anticipated Test series against England. The deeply experienced Kiwi squad features world-class batting stars like Kane Williamson and welcomes back terrifyingly fast bowlers like Kyle Jamieson. A few of their regular players are away due to lucrative franchise commitments. Even so, the powerful Black Caps are incredibly eager to find their rhythm, adjust to the red ball, and dominate the pitch in this format.
A shorter Test for a bold new era - Hello and welcome to all the fans of this beautiful game. The historic first Test match between Ireland and New Zealand at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast is a monumental event for global cricket. This match is a crucial four-day experiment backed by the International Cricket Council. The main goal is to see if shortening the traditional five-day format can save time, cut costs, and make the game more exciting for modern fans. For the hosts, this rare four-day fixture is a deeply proud but highly challenging milestone. It marks only the 13th Test match Ireland has played in the game's longest and most respected format since they first earned their official Test status back in 2017.
... MATCHDAY ...
History beckons in Belfast - Test cricket arrives in Belfast with a sense of history attached to it. Ireland and New Zealand are set to meet in the longest format for the very first time, and while it may be just a one-off Test, there is plenty riding on it for both sides. For Ireland, it is another opportunity to prove they belong at this level and continue building their red-ball journey after memorable wins over Afghanistan and Zimbabwe in recent years. This will only be Ireland's 13th Test match since gaining Full Member status, with just three wins to show so far, highlighting both the challenges and growth of their journey in the format. For New Zealand, it is the beginning of another stretch of red-ball cricket after back-to-back 2-0 series wins over Zimbabwe and West Indies, and this game also serves as ideal preparation ahead of their upcoming Test series in England in similarly seam-friendly conditions. After finishing runners-up in the 2026 T20 World Cup not long ago, they now switch gears back to the grind of Test cricket. Stormont, with its cloudy skies, seam-friendly surface and intimate atmosphere, feels like the perfect venue for a contest that could reward patience, discipline and character just as much as skill. Underdogs with nothing to lose - Ireland enter this Test with a squad heavily hit by injuries, missing experienced names like Paul Stirling, Josh Little and Barry McCarthy, but that has also opened the door for exciting young talent. Andrew Balbirnie once again leads the side and remains the backbone of their batting, while Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker will carry much of the responsibility in the middle order. Curtis Campher's all-round value and Mark Adair's ability to make things happen with both bat and ball will be crucial in home conditions. Ireland have also handed opportunities to four potential Test debutants - Jake Egan, Thomas Mayes, Liam McCarthy and teenage quick Reuben Wilson, highlighting their intent to build for the future despite the inexperience in the squad. The likes of Craig Young and Andy McBrine bring valuable experience, while Matthew Humphreys could come into play if the surface begins to wear later in the game. Ireland know they will start as underdogs, but at Stormont, where they registered their second-ever Test win against Zimbabwe in 2024, they will believe they can push New Zealand hard. Black Caps return to familiar territory - New Zealand, meanwhile, arrive with a squad that still carries plenty of quality even with a few familiar names unavailable because of IPL and county commitments. Kane Williamson's calm presence and world-class ability against seam bowling naturally make him the centrepiece, while Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell provide further stability and experience to the batting lineup. Rachin Ravindra continues to grow into one of the most exciting all-format players in world cricket, and conditions in Belfast could suit his composed style perfectly. With the ball, the Black Caps once again look dangerous. Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson have the tools to exploit any movement on offer, while Will O'Rourke's bounce and aggression add another dimension to the attack. Mitchell Santner's absence means more responsibility on the seamers, but New Zealand are traditionally one of the best sides in adapting to these kinds of conditions, especially away from home. Stormont's conditions could shape the contest - Stormont itself could become one of the biggest talking points of the match. The venue generally offers assistance for seamers early on, particularly under overcast skies, but if batters manage to get through the first 30-40 overs, runs can flow quickly on what becomes a decent batting surface. Ireland's previous Test here against Zimbabwe showed just how quickly momentum can swing from session to session. Weather, as always in Belfast, could also play a role, with rain interruptions never too far away at this time of year. Form (Last 5 completed Tests, recent first) - IRE - LLWWW | NZ - WWDWW. A proper old-school Test awaits - There is something beautifully old-school about this contest, a four-day Test at a compact ground, a proud underdog trying to create history, and a heavyweight side looking to avoid becoming part of it. Ireland will feed off the home support and the emotion of the occasion, while New Zealand will know that in conditions like these, taking anything lightly can become dangerous very quickly. Either way, Belfast is set to witness a landmark week in Irish cricket history.
