In 7th heaven - Last 7 completed ODIs, 7 wins for Afghanistan over Ireland. The last time the Irish beat the Afghans in this format was way back in 2019, in Belfast - 7 long years back. This contest was anything but a contest from the scorecard but if you take that one man out - Rashid Khan - the game could have actually got much closer than it did. The 18-month gap between ODIs also hurt the home side with clear rustiness visible and one expects a better display come the third ODI on Monday, 10th August, 2026. As far as the Afghans are concerned, they would want a more clinical show in both departments and gain an unassailable lead. The first ball is scheduled to be bowled on Monday at 9.45 am GMT, but our buildup will begin well in advance. So do tune in early. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Made plans, executed well - That is the simple explanation from the victorious skipper of Afghanistan, RAHMAT SHAH, on his team's win. He says that the top order played well, they assessed the conditions well and that's why the score nearly reached 300. On his batters not converting their starts, Shah admits that his side missed out on 20-30 runs and feels that they could have got those if they had not given wickets in the middle overs. On his specific bowling changes, the skipper agrees, stating that he was making his changes based on the heavy wind. Explains that he tried to use his fast bowlers against the wind and spinners into the wind. Praises Rashid Khan for bowling really well and is happy to have him in the side. On Afghanistan's bowling overall, RS says that the plans were made in the dressing room, but the bowling unit executed it well in the middle, hence the result is good.
A bit of rust - That's what the captain of Ireland, PAUL STIRLING, reckons. Feels that they were rusty in all three facets and will look back at it in the next 24 hours. Details that in the field, they probably could have had a chance for a couple of runouts and in the batting, the back end just did not turn up. On the three debutants, Stirling says that they all showed what they can do and it is all about putting everything together in a package. Stresses that the debutants have shown signs that they belong here and the future looks bright. On how to deal Rashid, Paul says that the team has got to adapt pretty quickly. Admits that in the past as well, Ireland have found the spinner challenging but also believes that the batters did well to target the other bowlers in this game. Ends by saying that if not for Rashid, his side was very much in the game.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - The award goes to the champion from Afghanistan - RASHID KHAN - for stunning bowling figures of 7.4-0-34-6. On what did he enjoy while bowling, Rashid says that we get sharp spin here, which he really likes. But more importantly, he says, the challenge was hitting the right areas consistently. To this, the next question is what were those right areas on this pitch. Khan replies by stating that a length of around 5-5.5 metres, in line of the stumps, kept you in the game. However, he feels that nowadays, with so much T20 cricket, the spinners need to keep things simple for themselves and keep mixing it up with variations of pace on any surface. On his aim for improvement for the next game, RK gets the team in focus instead, saying that one game does not make his side a tough team. Remembers that Afghanistan had a very tough series against India, where their bowling was exposed, so they need to do better with the ball. Understands that they did not get a chance to bowl at the death here and want to improve there and also with the new ball. Ends by saying that with the World Cup in mind, if their bowling improves, Afghanistan can do well.
... THE PRESENTATION ...
Adapting to the conditions - Afghanistan did that, but Ireland could not. Given the fact that they had not played an ODI for 18 months told and despite winning the toss in favourable conditions, they could not make use of those. Inconsistent lines and lengths meant that the visitors piled on 299/8 after the game was shortened to 47 overs per side due to the early morning rain. While the hosts struggled to land the ball on one area consistently, the tourists batted fairly well, though they got an array of starts which were not converted. Ibrahim Zadran stood tall with his 84 while Mark Adair and Gavin Hoey were the pick of the Irish bowlers.
Ireland vs Rashid - Eventually, it has come down to that. It is not a surprise but it will hurt the home side a lot. With due respect to the champion, Ireland are not playing him for the first time but just could not read the ball out of his hand. Additionally, having done the hard work to get to 198/5, to lose their last 5 wickets for just 9 runs is a hard pill to swallow. Just like the Afghans, the Irish struggled to hang in there. Ibrahim Zadran's role was matched by Cade Carmichael, with a fine 62, but while Afghanistan had 6 batters scoring 30 or more, Ireland had only 2. Still, don't think the pitch was into question at all, as apart from bounce and a little bit of spin, the deck was a batting beauty.
Cometh the champion - Once again, we realize how crucial is Rashid Khan to his team's chances. He was on fire right from his first over, even arguing with the umpire and being told off. And he fuelled that anger towards his opposition, snaring 6 wickets. Barring Mohammad Saleem, who endured a torrid day, every bowler did well.
A poor finish - This is, in reference to both, Ireland's batting and our own coverage. We would like to extend heartfelt apologies for the lack of consistency in the coverage for this game. There seemed to be a massive issue from the streaming source and unfortunately, towards the end, it just got worse. Back to the match, the hosts have just got bulldozed in the last 4-odd overs.

Mohammad Saleem To Lorcan Tucker OUT!
OUT! MASSIVE SHOUT FOR LBW, NOT GIVEN, BUT TUCKER IS RUN OUT! You can either call it unlucky for the batter or exceptional alertness from the fielder. On a length, around off, angling down, Lorcan Tucker looks to flick it away but misses and is hit on the pads. Saleem roars an LBW appeal but the umpire moves away. Now, here comes the drama. Tucker does not know where the ball is and is wandering out of his crease. And the next thing he knows, the stumps are hit by a throw at his end and he has to walk back! Actually, the ball went off his pads towards point and Sediqullah Atal fielded and fired a direct hit at the striker's end. What a lucky break for Afghanistan. The 38-run stand is broken and IRELAND ARE 144/4 CHASING 300!

On middle and off, this time Cade does get the single, working the ball through mid-wicket. In fact, he will get more, as the fielder fumbles, the substitute, Nangeyalia Kharote, on for Azmatullah Omarzai. The ball goes behind and by the time he retrieves it, the batters return for the second.

DRINKS BREAK. What a bizarre passage of 3 overs. Spin was starting to choke the batters, then suddenly pace came back on and released the pressure, before spin eventually struck. The home side seems to be comfortable against pace but is just not able to pick either of Rashid or Ghazanfar. And one feels, that the match lies just there. If the spin twins are seen off, the Irish will back themselves to chase even 100 off the last 10 overs. Harry Tector walks in next, at number 4, replacing Andy Balbirnie.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! King Khan strikes. It is a short ball, but a quick one and a leg break at that, Andy Balbirnie probably did not pick it because his feet did not move. He tried a flat-footed punch and only succeeded in getting a thick outside edge to the keeper, Rahmanullah Gurbaz. A dramatic period of 3 overs at last results in a wicket for Afghanistan. Azmatullah Omarzai To Andy Balbirnie
FOUR BYES! Bonus runs. On a good length, outside off, Andy Balbirnie stays back to defend but the ball seams back in a long way, stays a touch low and goes between bat and pad. Just goes above the off stump and the keeper. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, tries diving to his left to stop that. But he misses the ball and it races to the fence behind.

Azmatullah Omarzai To Paul Stirling
FOUR! The first boundary of the chase. Slightly short of a half volley, outside off, Paul Stirling comes half forward and just plays a half punch. But the pace on the ball takes it through the covers towards the ropes.

Azmatullah Omarzai To Paul Stirling
WIDE. Radar lost. Omarzai probably wants to go full and straight, for the inswinger, but drifts it way too down the leg side. The ball pitches and then moves even further. Paul lets it be and it is an excellent diving stop to his left by the keeper.
