The BCCI has appointed veteran leg spinner Anil Kumble as India's new Test captain for the upcoming series against Pakistan.
Kumble will take over from Rahul Dravid who unexpectedly resigned from the captaincy citing personal reasons after the tour of England.
The decision was announced late on Thursday night after the second ODI match between India and Pakistan in Mohali.
Kumble, who retired from One-Day cricket after the 2007 World Cup, is India's 30th Test captain since the country played its first Test in 1932. The leg spinner has earlier captained India in one ODI against England in 2002.
He is also the leading wicket taker in Tests for India with 566 dismissals and is the third in the list of leading wicket takers in Test cricket.
On Tuesday, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar had declined to lead Team India in Tests. He had said that the Board should look to the younger generation.
Meanwhile, the Board has also decided to retain an unchanged squad for the next to One-Day matches against Pakistan.
