About Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy

Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy is the home ground of the Kandy Cricket Club. It is the only test ground in the world which under the proprietorship of a secondary-level school- Trinity College. Asgiriya Stadium Kandy hosted its first test in 1983 when Sri Lanka played against Australia. Asgiriya Stadium was scooped out of a hill and quite understandably considered one of the most beautiful of the cricket grounds in the world. The ground was founded in the 19th century. The pitch at Asgiriya Stadium, unlike the others in Sri Lanka offers generous bounce and favours fast bowling. The first Test match at the Asgiriya Stadium was played between Sri Lanka and Australia in 1983. While the first one-day game took place in the year 1986 between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. International stars like Ranjan Madugalle, Ravi Ratnayeke, Kumar Sangakkara, and Kaushalya Weeraratne, are a few who honed their budding cricketing talents at Asgiriya Stadium at Trinity school.
