It began as a fun day for Jo Wilfred Tsonga. He enjoys his moment under the sun with a Cancan dancer.

A few others though were hard at work as well. Juan del Potro reached his first grand slam quarter-final in three years with a straight-sets win over German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

He defeated the unseeded German 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 to set up a rematch of his 2009 US Open final victory over Swiss third seed Roger Federer.

Federer himself was having a good time. He handed out a masterclass to Australian teen Bernard Tomic as he reached the quarter-finals.

Nineteen-year-old Tomic, the great hope of Australian tennis, could only shake his head in disbelief. But FedEx had a kind word or two. "I had to work extremely hard and Bernard showed why he is going to be a great player in the future."

Disappointment extended to the Indians as well. Though Leander Paes moved on, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna crashed out of the Australian Open men's double.

There also was a real show of spirit here. Down four match points and hobbling with an ankle injury, defending champion Kim Clijsters somehow rallied for a dramatic 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory over Li Na.
Zoom
Li Na showed good class taking the first set but eventually threw in the towel despite having an opponent who was almost on one leg.

World Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki had no such problems. She defeated Jelena Jankovic in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals.
