A historic day in the tennis world. The two titans of the modern game. But cometh the hour to win a first Olympic gold, Novak Djokovic told everyone that he isn't ready yet to pass the torch. Carlos Alcaraz will get many more moment under the sun. But at 37, Novak Djokovic completes tennis. 

Novak Djokovic is the Paris Olympics 2024 tennis men's singles gold medal-winner.

Novak Djokovic has become only the fifth singles player to win a Career Golden Slam, i.e., winning the four Grand Slams and the Olympic singles gold. He joins an elite list alongside Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams.

Carlos Alcaraz is only 21. He will get this opportunity again, no doubt. The Spaniard has the world at his feet. He may only be going home with silver, but he was a worthy competitor to the great Novak.

Alcaraz has done his bit with his service. He wins his sixth game of the second set, and assures himself a tiebreaker at the bare minimum.

If he can break Djokovic now, he wins the set outright, and takes it to the deciding set.

We are getting closer and closer to a second tiebreaker in the Paris Olympics 2024 tennis men's singles final. Djokovic seals the game to make it 5-5.

Right then, Djokovic must hold serve to prevent Alcaraz from equalling the tie. Alcaraz will be giving everything in the next game, as this is a golden opportunity to draw level.

Alcaraz is aiming for the break. He levels the game at 30-30. 

Carlos Alcaraz continues to hold his serve, and has now taken a 4-3 lead in the second set. Neither player yet to drop a game in this match, and we could well be staring at another decisive tiebreaker.

Djokovic misses an easy return to achieve three break points. Alcaraz then wins the next point, making it 30-15.

The Serb takes the game 3-3. Four straight points for Djokovic after losing the first. All-square in the second set again. Both players yet to drop a game on their serve.

Djokovic's slow lob made it a difficult dash for Alcaraz to reach it. But the Spaniard does, and then returns beyond Novak. 15-0 lead for him on Djokovic's serve.

Alcaraz wins the game to make it 3-2 in his favour in the second set.

Neck-and-neck in this game. It seemed like Alcaraz had fought back and would take the game, but never count out Novak. He keeps his hopes for a break alive.

Once again, Novak Djokovic proves to be indomitable in his serve in the second set. He brings the set score back to two games each.

A double fault for Alcaraz, and it allows Djokovic back to 30-30 in the third game of the second set. The Spaniard is known to be cool under pressure, but even he must be feeling it with an Olympic gold on the line.

Alcaraz loses the next point, handing break point to Djokovic.

Comfortable first service in the second set for Djokovic. He does not allow a point to Alcaraz, and takes the game. 1-1.

Alcaraz takes advantage and then wraps up the first game of the second set, holding serve. He leads 1-0 now in the decisive second set.

Djokovic slips badly, but Alcaraz still scuffs his return to hand a point to the Serb. Djokovic comes back to level the first game at 40-40 and take it to deuce.

That was a scintillating first set, end-to-end, and went on for more than an hour and a half. Carlos Alcaraz knows how to beat Djokovic coming back from behind, having done so in the 2023 Wimbledon final. 

It's first blood for Novak Djokovic! He wins the tiebreaker 7-3, and takes the first set. 

Alcaraz has it all to do now, and must win both sets if he wants an Olympic gold in his maiden Olympics.

The first set has gone on for 1 hour 10 minutes now. Alcaraz holds serve, and we are ever closer now to a tiebreaker.

Alcaraz dashes to the baseline to reach a Djokovic return, and then makes him pay. He then slams a return past a slipping Djokovic, and leads 40-30. Break point chance!

Will Djokovic rue not convering 3 break points in that game? From 0-40 up, Djokovic has let go a golden opportunity to have a firm hold on the first set.

And Alcaraz completes the comeback, holds his serve and makes it 2-2. He survives another scare in the men's singles final.

And Alcaraz pulls it back from 0-40 to deuce! Boos from the crowd, not sure from where.

Once again, Djokovic has started well on Alcaraz's serve. This is a great chance for the Serb to break early!

We're just three games in, but this match seems set to go the distance. The two are stretching each other in every game.

That was a really long game, and phew! Alcaraz survives an early scare, and draws level. 1-1 in the first set.

The two titans are exchanging advantages. First, Alcaraz saves Djokovic's break point and now Djokovic denies Alcaraz his own game point. Alcaraz now in advantage again.

Djokovic has taken Alcaraz to deuce in the very first serve by the Spaniard. This is a great opportunity for Novak for a surprise early break.

The last time Djokovic and Alcaraz met, it was a dominant win for the 21-year-old final. Unfazed by the occasion, Alcaraz won 6-2, 6-2, 7-6, to win his second successive Wimbledon crown.

Alcaraz could've already won a gold by now, but his much-anticipated doubles combo with tennis great Rafa Nadal didn't quite go to plan. With two Olympic golds and 22 Grand Slams in his kitty, we may have seen Nadal for the final time in professional tennis.

Let's hope not, but if so, what a career it has been.

This is Carlos Alcaraz's first Olympics, of course. It's remarkably easy to forget that Alcaraz is only 21 years old, given how incredibly composed and complete his game is. But he is going for gold on his maiden Olympics appearance.

For all of Djokovic's glory -- he is the record Grand Slam holder, don't forget, with 24 -- he has never managed to taste the ultimate success at the Olympics. Till date, he only has a bronze from Beijing 2008. 

He will leave with at least a silver today, but it's the gold he so dearly wishes for. Much like Lionel Messi yearned the World Cup to complete his cabinet, Djokovic must be yearning the Olympic gold.

Months before the Olympics, fans had awaited this fixture. When the draw was announced, most people expected it to be the final. And so it has proved to be.

Alcaraz and Djokovic have faced six times before, and the record stands at 3-3. Well, we couldn't have asked for a match with higher stakes to decide who takes the edge in the H2H.

The Women's Doubles bronze medal match at Paris 2024 has ended, and it is the Spanish pair of Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo who have clinched bronze. Congratulations to them!

It also means that we are now moments away from the Djokovic vs Alcaraz.
