Top 5 best spells in Indian Premier League
April 14, 2014 18:47
Sohail Tanvir's destructive spell against Chennai Super Kings set the tone for the bowlers to dominate in the Indian Premier League.

Pakistan's cricketers might have become untouchables for IPL side now but there was a time when men from across the border made major impacts in the glitzy T20 tournament. One such was Sohail Tanvir's haul of 6/14, which completely destroyed the powerful Chennai Super Kings and perhaps paved the way for Rajasthan Royals' sensational triumph in the first edition. The left-arm speedster exploited the helpful conditions in Jaipur to to blow CSK away for 109 while RR chased down the target of 110 with eight wickets to spare.

Royal Challengers Bangalore had got off to a disastrous start in the IPL, finishing bottom of the pile in the first edition and the owners looked up to their senior stars to turn things around for them in 2009 in South Africa. RCB did not exactly get off to a promising start when their batsmen folded up for a mere 133 against defending champions Rajasthan Royals. But then Anil Kumble decided to step in and sent the Royals crashing to defeat, picking up 5/5 in just 3.1 overs. That to date, is perhaps the best spell of bowling ever by an Indian in the IPL.

Chasing 165 for victory over Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings were cruising along at 101/3, before the feisty Harbhajan Singh decided to take matters in his own hands. The off-spinner teased and flummoxed Chennai's vaunted batting line up and took out five wickets, giving away 18 runs to set up a dramatic victory for Mumbai IPL 2011. The effort would have been more special given CSK's skills in tackling spinners of all kind.

When you talking of top bowling spells in the IPL, Lasith Malinga can never be far away. It was still early days in IPL 2011 and the players were still recovering from the frenzy of the World Cup, which had concluded only eight days ago. It was probably not the best time to run into Malinga, who sent Delhi's batsmen scurrying for cover, picking up 5/13, as the hosts collapsed for 95 at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Deccan Chargers were having another poor run in 2011, two years after lifting the IPL trophy in South Africa and they were up against it facing the unfancied Kochi Tuskers Kerela. Deccan had folded up for a lowly 129 and Kochi were staring at a rare victory. But Ishant Sharma had other plans - the lanky pacer was relenltess and poured cold water on KTK's ideas of triump, finishing with 5/12 off three overs. Kochi Tuskers were bundled out for 74 and Deccan Chargers went back home a much happier lot
