West Indies are World T20 Champions

Sri Lankan fans had the first laugh when the match began as despite losing the toss, their team struck early.

Ajantha Mendis was on fire and he bowled a superb spell early on. This after Johnson Charles fell to Angelo Matthews in the opening over.

The biggest wicket of the innings came in the form of Chris Gayle.

Gayle looked under pressure and despite his stoic form in the tournament so far, he could only score 3 from 16 deliveries.

Mendis piled on more pressure when he removed Dwayne Bravo (19).

Marlon Samuels steadied West Indies' innings. He hit a half-century and finished his innings on 78 from 56.

Samuels eventually fell to Akila Dhananjaya - brought back to replace Rangana Herath - who was economical as well in his three overs.

There was some late hitting and West Indies posted 137 from their quota of 20 overs. Mendis finished with four.

The visitors were relentless with the ball though. Once Sri Lanka came out to chase, the bowlers looked unforgiving with Ravi Rampaul dismissing Tillakaratne Dilshan (0) in the first over itself.

Dilshan's wicket dampened spirits in Colombo, but worse was yet to come.

Kumar Sangakkara came out to partner Mahela Jayawardena and the two managed to rebuild the innings for a while.

Jayawardene (in pic) in particular, was in good touch and took 33. He however could not last for too long after losing Sangakkara (22) and Angelo Mattheews (1).

The fielding was sharp too. Sunil Narine dismissed Jayawardene and then inflicted a run-out as well. The middle-order showed no signs of life. The 36-run margin vouching for the same.

The celebrations were unique, loud and in true Caribbean style!
