David Warner found himself relegated to 12th man after being left out for disciplinary reasons.
Skipper George Bailey led from the front scoring 55 runs.
Adam Voges made up for Warner's absence with 71 from 76 balls.
Nathan McCullum was economical and picked up wickets with figures of 2 for 46.
Mtichell McClenaghan led the way for the Kiwis with 4 for 65 as Australia ended at 243/8 in 50 overs.
Clint McKay made the early inroads removing Martin Guptill and Luke Ronchi and Australia looked set to make a match of it.
But the heavens opened up and after an inspection by the umpires, play was called off and the match was abandoned. A possible contest had ended in deadlock due to the weather.
