For the first time in 16 years, Spain have won a knockout match at the FIFA World Cup. Their last knockout victory came in the final of the 2010 World Cup. In 2014, they were eliminated in the group stage, while they lost in the first knockout round in both 2018 and 2022.

Despite being two goals down, Austria have been unable to bring some urgency into their play and disrupt Spain. The Spaniards are in complete control, keeping the ball cleverly and not letting Austria get a look-in. 

A lovely move by Spain. Oyarzabal cuts it in from the left, Austria fail to clear it properly, Yamal takes a shot but it's cleared off the goalline by David Alaba!

Ferran Torres and Mikel Merino come on for Spain after the second hydration break. Dani Olmo and Alex Baena have been substituted. Lamine Yamal is still on the pitch. Remember, if Yamal scores, he will become the youngest World Cup knockout goalscorer in the 21st century. If Yamal does score, he will also become the third-youngest World Cup knockout scorer of all time, behind Pele and Michael Owen.

GOOOOAAAALLL! Pedro Porro scores for Spain! It's a surprise goalscorer, as the right-back pops into the box to score his first senior international goal. Olmo and Cucurella create the move, before the left-back lays it for Alex Baena on the left. Baena's cross is headed in by Porro, who had made an unexpected run!

Massive chance for Austria! A fresh new strike force is on the pitch, in the form of 6'4" Marko Arnautovic and 6'7" Sasa Kalajdzic. Sabitzer delivers a brilliant cross, Kalajdzic slams the header but it's just over the bar! Best chance for Austria in the game. They're still in this.

Austria create something for the first time in the second half. It's an attack down the left, with Marcel Sabitzer at the heart of it. Sabitzer puts in a delicate low cross into the box, but Unai Simon gathers it before Gregoritsch can reach it.

Dani Olmo gets two chances in the space of a few seconds, but both times he fails to get a shot away. Olmo drives towards the box at first but gets tackled before he can take a shot. Then Lamine Yamal receives the ball on the right, cuts in and passes to Olmo in the box, but he's unable to get a shot away again.

We are back! The second half gets underway in Los Angeles. Spain attacking from right to left now. They'll be hoping to bury this game with another goal or two. But can Austria stage a comeback?

An incredible stat here: Unai Simon has surpassed the legendary Iker Casillas to become the Spain goalkeeper to go the most minutes without conceding a goal at the FIFA World Cup. Unai Simon is yet to concede a single goal so far in the 2026 tournament.

HALF TIME! The first half comes to an end at the Los Angeles Stadium. It has been a brilliant half for Spain, completely dominated by the men in red. They had a goal disallowed early on, but Mikel Oyarzabal scored in the 36th minute to hand them the advantage. Austria could've easily conceded more, but goalkeeper Alexander Schlager has been brilliant so far.

Four minutes has been added on at the end of the first half. Spain have won a free-kick on the edge of the Austria box, after a foul on Alex Baena. Baena and Dani Olmo are lining up the set-piece. And Baena hits the POST! And then Lamine Yamal shoots in the box from the rebound, but Schlager makes a terrific save!

GOOOAAAALLLL! Mikel Oyarzabal gives Spain the lead! Lovely throughball to find left-back Marc Cucurella's overlapping run, he cuts it back and Oyarzabal finishes it with a brilliant first-time finish. Spain take the lead, and it has been coming! The disappointment of the disallowed goal can be put behind now.

Fantastic save by Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager! Mikel Oyarzabal creates some space on the edge of the box and shoots hard with his left foot, but Schlager reacts brilliantly and makes a superb outstretched save to keep the scores level. Chances increasing for Spain, but Austria are holding strong.

Spain goal RULED OUT! A big chance created by Spain at first, but a crucial tackle from Stefan Posch denies them a shot at goal. Yamal takes the resulting corner, its punched out by the goalkeeper, but Marc Cucurella scores from the rebound! But it's ruled out! The referee deems that the goalkeeper had been fouled during the move. Austria survive a scare.

The match resumes after the hydration break, and Spain create the first attack immediately. It's Lamine Yamal at the heart of the build-up once again. He sends Pedro Porro through on the right, who whips in a poor cross ultimately.

Alex Baena chips in a lofted pass towards Mikel Oyarzabal in the box, but Austria centre-back Kevin Danso recovers brilliantly to win the ball back. Spain may be enjoying possession, but Austria have defended very well so far.

Lovely looping cross from Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer into the box, striker Michael Gregoritsch jumps above the Spanish defence but fails to connect with the ball. Chance goes begging for Austria!

Lamine Yamal drives into the box from the right wing, goes down after a challenge from Austria's Konrad Laimer, but the referee waves play on. No penalty awarded to Spain. But it is all Spain at the moment.

Cross in from the right flank towards Dani Olmo in the box, who shoots it on the volley but it's blocked by an Austrian defender. Spain threaten from the resulting corner, but Austria manage to head it away. Early momentum for Spain.

Lamine Yamal is on the move once again, cutting in from the left wing and trying to create an opportunity, but Austria prevent the danger and send it out for a corner. Yamal looks to be playing more centrally, or even down the left, as opposed to his natural right wing position in the early stages of the game.

It has been a hit-and-miss FIFA World Cup for Pedri so far. One of the best midfielders in the world, the Spain star has put in some composed performances, but is yet to take the World Cup by storm. Will today be his best performance of the tournament?

Austria captain David Alaba has been one of Europe's premier defenders over the last decade, but at 33, he is now on his last legs. Alaba has struggled with injuries in recent years, and left Real Madrid at the end of the 2025-26 season. This could well be his last dance on the international stage with Austria, and in that case, he would surely love to leave on a high.

We are just about 20 minutes away from kick off in the match between Spain and Austria. An exciting contest lies in front of us, with Lamine Yamal the star man to look out for. 

FIFA World Cup 2026 is the first time that Austria have qualified for the global tournament in 28 years, and the first time they've progressed past the group stage in 44 years! The last time Austria went beyond the group stage was in the 1982 World Cup. Once bronze medalists (in 1954), success at the global stage has evaded Austria for many, many years now.

As the defending Euro champions, Spain are naturally one of the favourites to go all the way. Ahead of the World Cup, NDTV had conducted a research where four different AI chatbots had predicted Spain to be the winner this year. The talent is certainly there, but will they be able to handle the pressure of winning five in a row and go all the way?

The winner of the Spain-Austria match will face either Portugal or Croatia in the Round of 16 of FIFA World Cup 2026. After that, it will be either USA or Belgium in the quarter-final. Some cracking games in store!

Austria's FIFA World Cup 2026 journey began with a 3-1 win over Jordan. They gave Argentina a good fight but were beaten by Lionel Messi's magic. In their last group game, Austria played out a dramatic 3-3 draw with Algeria, tying the game in the 96th minute, to finish second in Group J.

Spain's FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign did not start perfectly as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Cape Verde. However, Spain bounced back to beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 in their second group game, and then beat Uruguay 1-0 to comfortably top Group H in the end.

Lamine Yamal, at the age of 18 years and 354 days, can become the third-youngest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup knockout matches if he scores today, only behind Brazilian icon Pele and former Ballon d'Or winner Michael Owen. If Yamal scores against Austria, he will become the youngest World Cup knockout goalscorer in the 21st century, beating Kylian Mbappe.

Austria XI vs Spain: Austria have announced their starting XI for the Round of 32 match against Spain. Experience across the pitch, be it David Alaba and Konrad Laimer in defence, Marcel Sabitzer in midfield or Marko Arnautovic on the bench. Keep an eye on 20-year-old attacking midfielder Paul Wanner.
