Former Test opener and NDTV expert Sunil Gavaskar has blamed openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma for India suffering a four-nil ODI rout in New Zealand. Gavaskar said India did not get starts in any match and that put pressure on the middle order. Gavaskar feels the New Zealand debacle should be a lesson for Indian selectors and the team management, who now need to explore all available talent to find the right combination ahead of the 2015 World Cup Down Under. Gavaskar feels only experience cannot be the sole determining factor for picking players. Indicating that there was still scope for senior players, Gavaskar has suggested a horses-for-courses policy.
