Ridley Detamore Jacobs Profile

The Mr. Dependable of the Caribbean, Ridley Jacobs at times seemed to be a little uncoordinated behind the stumps but was regarded as a competent wicket-keeper. The short and podgy glovie may not have been a very fluent stroke maker but could easily use the power in his broad shoulders and hit a few lusty blows. Jacobs had to wait until he turned 31 of a Test debut against South Africa in 1998-99.

He developed a liking towards fast bowling and scored his first century against a fiery Proteas bowling line up, including the likes of Donald, Pollock and Ntini. His ability to occupy the crease for long periods proved essential, at a time with West Indies cricket on the decline.

By mid 2004 Jacobs’ performance behind the wickets fell drastically which eventually caused a decline in his overall form. As a result he was dropped from the Test side, after which he permanently retired from international cricket.
