Sachin Tendulkar, who sworn in as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, said he would like to help other sports but he will not take his focus away from cricket. Speaking to media he said, "In the last 22 years of my international career, cricket has given me so much and I also wanted to give something back to cricket in the latter half of my life. Today with the nomination, I am in a better position not only to help cricket but also other sports." (AFP Photo)
Sachin's swearing in comes at a time when many have asked why he has not been given the nation's highest civilian honour -the Bharat Ratna. In March, Sachin became the only cricketer to get a hundred centuries in international cricket.
He is the first active sportsperson to become a member of the Parliament. He is also the first sportsperson to be nominated by the President to the Upper House. Only other member in the Rajya Sabha is former hockey captain Dilip Tirkey who is an elected member.
Sachin Tendulkar, after garnering many laurels in cricket, penning his way to national glory. President Pratibha Patil had approved the cricket legend's name along with Bollywood actor Rekha and businesswoman Anu Aga in April for the Upper House of the Parliament. The approval had come after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wrote to the President with the government's recommendations. (PTI Photo)

When asked on how he would take time out of his busy cricket schedule, he said, "I am a nominee. I did not go to anyone asking to be a Rajya Sabha member. It's an honour and I accept that with respect. But I am here because of my cricket. I can't take my focus away from cricket because that is where it all started for me." (AFP Photo)
