The PCB inquiry committee probing the detention of controversial fast bowler Mohammad Asif in Dubai last year in June is expected to wrap up its proceedings on Thursday with a final hearing.
Officials of the Pakistan cricket Board said that the three-member committee headed by former Test captain Wasim Bari had summoned Asif for the final hearing today before it submits its recommendations to the board.
Asif, who is already serving a one-year ban for failing a dope test in the Indian Premier League, spent 19-days in detention in Dubai last year while returning from India.
Dubai authorities detained him after finding a small quantity of opium on him but later released him without filing any criminal charges against him.
A PCB official made it clear that although Asif was already serving a ban from the IPL drugs inquiry tribunal until September this year but if the inquiry committee also recommended any action against the pacer for his Dubai episode the board would enforce the recommendations.
"Everything depends on what the inquiry committee recommends. The board will not make any compromises on discipline," the official said.
He said if the inquiry committee deemed that Asif had committed a violation of the board's code of conduct by being detained in Dubai it could recommend any penalty.
Asif, who has appeared twice before the inquiry committee besides recording his statement, has also submitted some documents to prove that he was not deported from Dubai and that no criminal charges were filed against him.
He has also said that he didn't know the substance he had on him was opium and insisted it was a herbal medicine prescribed to him by a local Hakeem for his elbow problem.
Sources say the inquiry committee in view of the one-year ban already imposed on Asif is likely to recommend only a financial penalty on him and even if it recommends a short term ban it would run concurrently with the ban imposed by the IPL tribunal.
Asif has been under suspension since last July when the board suspended him after his positive test results were announced by the IPL.
