Well then, this brings us to the end of a captivating clash that ebbed and flowed back and forth constantly, but it was New Zealand Women Under-19 who held their nerves and prevented the USA from chasing the total that was below three figures. But what a gripping start it has been in this Super Six phase, hasn't it? But worry not, the entertainment is just going to multiply as we have a couple more games lined up for you all. In just about an hour or so, Australia Women Under-19 are going to clash against West Indies Women Under-19, here at the same venue. And at Sarawak, it will be South Africa Women Under-19 going up against Ireland Women Under-19. The first ball for both matches will be bowled at 6.30 am GMT. The build-up for both games has begun just now. You can switch the tabs and follow all the pre-match excitement of those games. But from here, we take your leave! Cheers!
The captain of New Zealand Women Under-19, Tash Wakelin says that it was a great effort with the ball and the field for them and they have really enjoyed it. She further adds that they got a good start at the start with the bat but then lost quick wickets losing the momentum. She appreciates Hannah and Rishika for bowling well and getting the game back for them. Further adds that she was happy with the fact that they got to play a complete 20-over game as all the previous games were rain affected.
USA Women Under-19 skipper, Anika Kolan begins by saying that Ritu Singh has a past history of making a comeback and hence they promoted her up in the order. Not the result that they wanted and credit the New Zealand bowlers for bowling well and it is something that they will take with a pinch of salt and revisit the basics to improve. Accepts that they couldn't build partnerships in the middle but there's a lot of faith in the team. Ends by saying that there is no hard feeling in the team and they will work harder.
Stay tuned for the presentation ceremony...
Ritu Singh is the Player of the Match for her fantastic five-wicket haul. She says that it has been a very good memory for her and she enjoyed every bit of it. She further adds that it wasn't the result she was expecting but the team played and fought really well right till the end and she will never forget this day in her career. Ends by saying that she is very grateful to the team and the management for this opportunity.
Earlier in the game, USA Women Under-19 invited New Zealand to bat on a surface that had a bit of moisture on it. USA were quick with their bowling changes in order to unsettle the batters which did prove fruitful. It was Ritu Singh who triggered a collapse and then wickets fell at regular intervals. The USA bowlers tested the batters with slowness and spin, to which the Kiwi batters had no answers and slipped from 32/0 to 55/6 around the halfway mark. Jaswal and Francis slowed things up a bit and fought back by forming a crucial partnership of 34 runs to get back on track. However, that momentum was swiftly stopped by Ritu Singh who wrapped New Zealand under 100 runs with a stellar 5-wicket haul.
For New Zealand Women Under-19, Rishika Jaswal and Kate Irwin dented through the USA middle overs, sharing four wickets among them, two each. With 24 still needed in the last five overs or so and just a couple of wickets in hand, the pressure was totally on the USA Women. They couldn't handle it and just lost their way being bundled up on 79.
In came Ritu Singh who attempted to form a resilient stand with Aditi Chudasama to neutralize further threat of wickets. Ritu was also provided a reprieve of a dropped catch to which she couldn't cash in nicely and got run out. From there, pressure crept in over USA as they further slipped down to 73/8 with their middle order blown away. New Zealand bowlers adjusted their lengths and lines smartly, keeping it stump-to-stump and providing no width which did wonders for them.
Anything that was offered in pace was being punished and hence, the Kiwi bowlers adjusted to let the batters reach the ball by keeping it slow. Disha though formed good little partnerships with Isani Vaghela and then Anika Kolan. However, wickets kept tumbling at the other end, with Ritu herself perishing inside the ten overs. USA slipped from 25/1 to a concerning 41/4 under 8 overs.
With a total of 97 to chase, USA Women Under-19 lost an early wicket in the form of Chetna Reddy Pagydyala in the second over. But it was Disha Dhingra who turned the heat with regular boundaries inside the Powerplay. USA were cruising along nicely with Disha trying to keep the scorecard ticking along. As a result, they squeezed out 37 of the fielding restrictions.
What a dramatic turnaround this has been! USA Women Under-19 were in a very comfortable position, needing just 25 runs to win from more than six overs or so remaining, but a tremendous comeback from New Zealand Women Under-19 in the backend just turned the game on its head as they snagged 5 wickets for the last 6 runs.
