Done and dusted with this game. Sri Lanka suffered their 9th consecutive loss at home and need a big turnaround in the next match if they want to stay alive in this series. The third ODI is on Sunday in Pallekele and we look forward to your company at 0945 local (0415 GMT). Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!
South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis says that they are renowned for fighting back. Admits that Test series was disappointing. Adds that today it was tricky as well but they adapted well. Considers the pitch to be a decent one but towards the end it got a bit tired. Is pleased that they are chasing well at the moment and putting the pressure on the Sri Lankan spinners. Terms their bowling performance as exceptional and praises his bowlers for pulling it back whenever Sri Lanka tried to sniff a comeback. Praises his team for executing the plans superbly. On him getting out in the 40s with great consistency on this tour, du Plessis replies that he is not thinking much about it and is just trying to stay positive.
Sri Lanka skipper, Angelo Mathews says that they gave away too many wickets upfront and never got going. Also adds they didn't hold on to the catches which cost them. Further says that their bowlers were bowling in good areas but the fielding let them down. On Niroshan Dickwella's injury, Angelo informs that he has gone for a scan and hopes that he will be okay. Mentions that there are a lot of positives and they still can stay alive in the series if they win the next game. On his own batting form, Mathews admits that he couldn't really get away with the shots as the wickets kept falling but is pleased with his batting. On his fitness, he replies that he is doing fine.
Man of the Match, Quinton de Kock says that he is not too sure what has changed but good work is finally paying off. Reckons that it's not spinning as much as it was during the Test matches. Adds that the last two months have been difficult and it's always challenging anywhere in the subcontinent. On the pitch, he feels that the surface stayed the same throughout and maybe spun a little more in the second half but was a good one for batting overall.
The old cliche - Catches win matches! Sri Lanka dropped quite a few and their ground fielding was also mediocre. That didn't allow their bowlers to build any kind of pressure and eventually it cost them dearly. They dropped de Kock when he was on 18 and 24, and the South African wicket-keeper made them pay. The bowling of Akila Dananjaya was the only positive that the hosts can take from this game as apart from him, the rest struggled. Also, the way the South African batsmen have decoded the spin mystery is really commendable.
Chasing a target of 245 could have been a tricky task for the visiting team but their openers provided a steady start and laid a strong platform. Quinton de Kock, in particular, looked in blazing form and dominated Sri Lanka's spinners. He never allowed the pressure to build by finding the fence at regular intervals. As a result, in spite of a few wickets going down, South Africa were never rattled. Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy's knocks threw Sri Lanka's chances out of the window. Towards the end, the two all-rounders, Mulder and Phehlukwayo finished the formalities with utmost ease.
Tables have turned in the shorter format. Another comprehensive win for the Proteas as they go 2-0 up in the 5-match ODI series. First up, their bowlers did a commendable job in restricting Sri Lanka to a below par total. Niroshan Dickwella played a knock of substance but the rest didn't contribute much. Angelo Mathews' innings was on the slower side and that failed to give Sri Lanka the much-needed kick in the death overs. Credit to the Protean bowlers also for bowling superbly with both the new and old balls.
