So that ends a pretty one-sided game in Port Elizabeth. One expected Sri Lanka to carry on from the momentum gained in the T20Is but South Africa were just too strong for them today, ironically on a pitch which suited the tourists more. The series now moves to Durban where the second ODI will be played under lights. Can the Lankans come back and level the series? Join us on Wednesday, 1st February, 2017 at 1330 local (1130 GMT). Adios! Take Care!
Man of the Match, Imran Tahir is very happy with the way he bowled today. Calls it a pleasing day for him and the team. Believes that he always wants to contribute, not take anything for granted. Playing every game for South Africa is an honour and he tries to give more than 200 percent. Informs that today is his wedding anniversary and his wife wanted him to take five wickets. He is happy to have taken three and getting the Man of the Match. Calls it tough bowling against the wind as it made it easier for the batsmen. Mentions that he just wanted to bowl to his field, somehow he managed to get the wickets using his variations. Opines that the most pleasing thing is that he did not go away from his plans. Credits the fast bowlers for starting well. Calls it an honor to do well for South Africa. Ends up saying that the celebrations are taking a lot of energy but it just shows how much it means to him and it is what keeps him going.
Victorious South African skipper, AB de Villiers, says that it was a good performance. The wicket was slow and low, which is actually suited to Sri Lanka but his team adjusted well. Credits the bowlers for setting up the win. Praises his new-ball bowlers for bowling with a lot of intensity and later, Imran Tahir, who controlled the game in the middle overs. On his captaincy on a windy day, he says that he felt that it was a bit windy but he used the experience he had gained while playing a game in Hambantota. Says that he has plenty of experience in the tank for ideas. On the field, he has Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis. Feels that 180 was way below par. Had expected 250 to be difficult to chase down. Praises his openers for seeing off bowlers whom the team has not played much. Stresses that South Africa are up for it in the ODI series and expects Sri Lanka to come back hard in the second ODI, especially after they fared so well in the T20Is.
Sri Lanka skipper, Upul Tharanga starts off admitting that they did not begin well. Chandimal and Mendis had a partnership but they did not manage to come back after that start. Calls it a slow wicket and credits South African bowlers for hitting the right areas. Mentions that his spinners can come into the game if they have a score on board but opines that his spinners could not control the flow. Admits that they have a lot of areas to improve going ahead. Ends by saying that they will sit together and have a chat about the coming days.
It was the bowlers who set the game up for the hosts when they won the toss and inserted Sri Lanka. Wayne Parnell took out the Lankan openers early but Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal threatened to get the visitors back in the game. It was Imran Tahir, who broke the back of the innings with a tight spell of 3/26. It was a near perfect game for the hosts that gave them the 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.
That's as clinical as it gets from South Africa! Chasing a score of 182, the South Africa openers got them off to good start with a 71-run stand. Sri Lankan bowlers could not use the new balls as they would have liked and the spinners lacked the bite and guile of Tahir to make an impact. Amla missed out on a big score, getting out on 57. Faf du Plessis then hit a fine fifty and he along with AB de Villiers completed the formalities as South Africa romped home with as many as 15.4 overs to spare with eight wickets in hand.
