That's it from us in this game. After seeing numerous awe-inspiring cricket from West Indies, one is forced to wonder what has happened to them. Yet one can only go back into the shell and hope for their 'better' side to turn up. New Zealand, like always, are a side filled with exuberance and that reflects well from their outings. Tim Southee, the New Zealand skipper, says they struggled early on with the bat but did well in the end. Credits the side for not losing their way with the bat in the tougher times apart from lauding the fielders and bowlers for their performance. Admits getting the momentum at the end of their time with the bat which they grabbed and carried into their bowling. Reckons that the beauty of bowling second is that one can assess the conditions and plan bowling accordingly. Signs off saying he enjoyed leading the side and a clinical performance from them made things easier.
Carlos Brathwaite, the Windies skipper, says they were in the game for most part till the last couple of overs with the ball. Admits that they didn't get a big over when they were batting, something that is required while chasing a tall score. He credits the opposition bowlers and fielders. Is happy with the decision to chase as largely they were in control of it. Admits that Williams went awry towards the end but it happens. Adds that it gave the hosts some momentum. States that this wasn't an abysmal performance and they have a lot of positives to take from it. Asserts that training improves skills but it is all about execution in the middle. Regretfully says that had they got Munro early, things could have been different in the end. Ends saying that he looks forward to an improved performance and squaring the series in the next game.
Glenn Phillips is the Man of the Match for his maiden T20I fifty and 4 dismissals with the gloves, including the stunning catch of Chris Gayle. He says that the track was slow initially and it was tough to bat on. He and Munro, being natural hitters, tried to go a bit too hard and were unsuccessful. Adds that they took about 5 overs to assess the conditions and held back, which is against their nature. Also admits that starting slow was hard on him and talking with his partner, Munro, helped. About taking that stunning catch, he states being unsure of where the ball had flown and who was coming in from fine leg. Yet he decided to go for the catch and it came out pretty well. Credits the whole side for churning out a complete performance. He reckons that he has to work on his rotation of strike. Ends saying that the dynamics of batting at no.3 aren't far different than that of opening as unless the openers are off to a flier, the no.3 batter has to face the new ball.
Earlier in the game, the Kiwis couldn't get off to a flier that they would have liked. The Windies bowlers were largely disciplined in keeping the opposition quiet, in spite of well made fifties from Munro and Phillips. Yet, the last couple of overs, where 34 runs were yielded - 25 from the last one - changed the momentum heavily in favour of the home side. They never looked back from thereon and rest is history. What do you say about the Black Caps? Their bowlers were on the mark in the defense of the 188-run target that they had set. Getting bigwigs like Gayle, McCullum or the batters of such order as a maiden scalp is an appreciable thing and Rance would sleep well tonight after picking up the former. That set the tone for the others to stifle the run-flow and go for the wickets, which they did. Rance was joined by his skipper Southee, both of whom had three wickets each to their credit to deny any chance of a comeback for the visitors.
And the Windies capitulate meekly yet again on this tour! One is left wondering when the real 'World Champions' West Indies side will turn up. When a side is chasing a high total, it requires two things - a decent start and one significant partnership. The visitors had neither of these and hence the end result isn't surprising. Gayle couldn't create a storm in Nelson and that set the tone for the hosts. Fletcher began steadily and was starting to look threatening before he was dismissed while attempting a rash shot. Post that, nobody stood up to be counted. Brathwaite flexed his muscles a touch but the task at hand was a touch too difficult by then.
