Right then, that's all we have from the final day of group-stage action. Earlier in the day, West Indies triumphed over Malaysia to secure their spot in the Super Six stage from Group A, joining India and Sri Lanka. Out of the 16 teams, 12 have progressed to the Super Six stage. The teams will be split into two groups, with those progressing from Group A facing two qualifying teams from Group D, while teams from Group B will compete against two qualifiers from Group C. The Super Six round commences on Saturday, 25th January, but before that, on Friday, 24th January, the four teams who have not qualified will be in action for the positional playoffs. In the first game of the day at 2.30 am GMT, Pakistan and Samoa will lock horns. Later on, at 6.30 am GMT, Nepal and Malaysia will square off. As always, our build-up for both games will begin much earlier. See you then. Cheers!
Niki Prasad, the victorious skipper of India says Sri Lanka bowled really well and they as a batting team managed to show intent which got them to such a score. Adds that the bowlers were very confident of defending this total and mentions that they look to give more than a hundred percent in every game and look to win.
The captain of Sri Lanka Women Under-19, Manudi Nanayakkara says that they faltered in the Powerplay and feels that the shot selection could have been better. Tells that they did well with the ball and in the field but could not perform as a batting unit. Mentions that they will look to do better with the bat in the Super Six stage.
Trisha Gongadi is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for her crucial knock of 49 runs. She says it feels good and adds that she looks to take the game deep and is feeling very confident in the middle. Mentions that it feels good to top the group and they look forward to the next challenge.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Earlier, Sri Lanka opted to bowl first, and their spinners made the most of the conditions on offer. Every time India seemed to gain momentum, Sri Lanka delivered timely breakthroughs to derail their progress. For India, it was Trisha Gongadi who stood tall amidst the struggles, scoring a crucial 49. Her knock proved vital in pushing India to a total of 118, as without her contribution, the score could have been significantly lower.
With 119 runs to chase, Sri Lanka were expected to face a stern challenge from the Indian spinners given the turn on offer. However, it was the Indian pace duo of Shabnam and Joshitha V J who wreaked havoc early on. The Powerplay turned into a nightmare for Sri Lanka, and things went from bad to worse as their skipper, Manudi Nanayakkara was run out, leaving them in tatters at 12/5. They could never really recover from there as the Indian spinners took over and tightened the screws even more.
An emphatic win for India to cap off their group-stage campaign! With three wins from three matches, the defending champions finish at the top of Group A. As for Sri Lanka, they excelled with the ball but just couldn’t make an impact with the bat. This defeat will dent their confidence going into the Super Six round, but the fight shown by the tail and the fact that they managed to bat out the full 20 overs will be a positive takeaway for them with the bat.
