Right then, England will be relieved to get their first win on the board after rain in their campaign opener meant they had to share points with Ireland, a side they would have expected to beat. With this win, England are now 2nd in Group B with 3 points, while the USA, who defeated Ireland earlier in the day, sit at the top with the same number of points. With a game left in the group stage for all 4 sides, the clash between Pakistan and Ireland is effectively a knockout, with the winner advancing to the Super Six. The attention now shifts to Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, 21st January, with a double-header in Group A. Sri Lanka face the West Indies at 2.30 am GMT, followed by India taking on Malaysia at 6.30 am GMT. As always, our build-up for both games will begin much earlier. See you then. Cheers!
Abigale Norgrove, the victorious skipper of England says it was great to get a win under their belt. Mentions that they wanted to go in with positive intent and that saw a few wickets go down but are happy that they ended on a positive note. Appreciates Katie Jones and says she motivates the team from behind the stumps and concludes that they have a strong squad and all 15 members will be backed right.
The captain of Pakistan Women Under-19, Komal Khan says that there were lapses in the field and they did not bat well. Adds that bowlers did well and made England work hard. Tells that they will look to improve in the next game. Mentions that had they fielded and batted well, it could have been a different result. Shares that they will look to do much better as a batting unit in the next game.
Katie Jones is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for her outstanding wicketkeeping and that anchoring unbeaten knock in the chase. She says she likes to get into battles and into the batter's face to stay in the game and tries to stay very reactive on such tracks. Mentions that she admires Sarah Taylor and she has inspired her a lot. Concludes that she feels very lucky to be part of such a good team.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
As for Pakistan, they showed glimpses of promise but were inconsistent, blowing hot and cold with their catching and ground fielding. After being inserted into bat, they got off to a steady start with their opening stand. However, their troubles began the moment Amuruthaa Surenkumar was introduced into the attack. From there, things unravelled rapidly for the Asian side, and the hole they dug themselves into only grew deeper. With just three batters reaching double digits, Pakistan's innings folded for a disappointing 66, leaving them with far too little to defend.
The runners-up of the previous edition, England, have secured their first win of the tournament! What should have been a straightforward chase turned into a slightly nervy start for England. They have only themselves to blame, as four of their top five batters tried to force the pace unnecessarily, which wasn’t ideal on a slower wicket. However, calm heads prevailed in the form of Abigale Norgrove and Katie Jones, who ensured there were no further hiccups in the chase.. Jones, in particular, left her mark on the game, not just with the bat but also with her exceptional glovework, claiming three catches and a stumping to cap off a fine performance.
