That's it from this encounter then! A dead rubber awaits as far as series is concerned but points on offer in the ODI Super League. England might want to test their strength while Ireland would be eager to end the series on the winning note. Will they be able to do so or will it be all England once again in the third game? That game too will be played at this very venue on Tuesday, 4th August 2020. Join us at 1400 local (1300 GMT) to enjoy action. Until then, take care!
Jonny Bairstow is named MAN OF THE MATCH for his blistering knock. He starts by telling me that he was in the mood of playing his best cricket. On getting to 3,000 runs, he says that he is proud to reach the landmark and hopes that he scores a lot more in the next few years. Adds that he is looking at the 2023 World Cup. Feels he is enjoying the batting at the top-order and mentions that he has worked hard on his game and is striking the ball nicely. Praises the bowling unit as a whole. Finishes by praising Campher and Ireland bowlers too.
England skipper, Eoin Morgan, tells that he did not know that they have got 20 points in the ODI Super League. Credits Bairstow at the top and Billings in the middle order for his performance. On Morgan giving the ball to Vince, Morgan tells that Vince has been their 6th bowler in the last 2 games but didn't get the chance to bowl so he threw the ball to him. Praises Mahmood for his performance and hopes he will play a few more games. On Bairstow's performance, Morgan tells that he is someone who can score freely without worrying about the surface. On his batting position in the two games, Morgan says that he is happy to step aside for the youngsters to bat up the order but he will not be playing at no. 6 for long.
Andy Balbirnie, the Ireland skipper, says they were too much short and they lost again five wickets early. Adds that Campher batted brilliantly and he again showed Ireland how to go about it. Mentions that they had to put attacking fields as they were defending a low score. States that they needed someone to step up and Josh Little did just that.
Who will be named the player of the match? Campher from the losing camp? Rashid for his brilliant bowling? Or Willey for his wickets early on and a vital inning with the bat too? Stay with us to find out.
Earlier in the game, after being asked to bowl first, England bowled tightly as Willey struck early. Ireland looked down and out but their hero from the last game, the 1-game old Campher once again scored a fine half-century and added important runs, first with Singh and then with McBrine to help Ireland post a total over 200. For England, Rashid was the pick of the bowler as he took 3 wickets while Willey and Mahmood got two to their name. They were taken for some runs in the death overs but their performance at the start meant that Ireland couldn't go towards a huge total. And, with the total being modest once again, even after a bit of struggle, England scaled it comfortably in the end.
Ireland got the first wicket quickly but they were blown away by the onslaught of Bairstow. He targeted Young and Little and when the spinner came inside the 10th over, he too was smashed. Campher provided a couple of breakthroughs while Little in the middle overs took 3 wickets in 2 overs to give the Irish side some hope but they eventually failed to get another wicket.
The run chase didn't start well for England as they lost Roy in the first over. However, his partner on the other end, was in a blistering mood as he nailed boundaries at will on his way to his 21st ODI half ton. While he saw a few wickets fall from his end, he kept smashing them at will. England stuttered a bit post his wicket but Billings and Willey calmly took the side home.
Another game! Another not-so-emphatic victory for England but they take the series 2-0 with one game still to be played. When they lost their 6th wicket on 137, Ireland would've sensed a chance. However, Billings and Willey with their unbeaten 79-run stand took the team to the victory.
