With that, we come to an end of this thrilling contest. The focus now shifts to Melbourne where the Boxing Day Test will be held on 26th December at the MCG. Do join us for that one. Until then, it's goodbye from us. Hop on to the India-England tab for the updates. Cheers!
STEVEN SMITH accepts that it got too close for comfort in the end. Praises Pakistan for putting up a really great fight. Says that his bowlers worked hard and praises Starc for producing that special delivery to remove Shafiq with an old soft ball. Denies that they were worried about losing although they were tensed. Defends his decision not to enforce the follow-on and says that he doesn't regret it. Lauds Pakistan's batsmen once more for the fight. Feels that the Day/Night Test concept is nice although this was too close for his comfort eventually.
MISBAH-UL-HAQ admits that it was a really nervy finish but still maintains that he is happy with the fight shown especially after the first innings debacle. Praises all the batsmen, particularly Shafiq and the tail for not giving up. Maintains that he believed that his team could do it coming into the final day. Feels that Wahab's wicket was crucial but still says that he kept believing. Adds that his team kept hope till the last wicket fell. Concludes by saying that his team is looking forward to the next Test.
ASAD SHAFIQ (PLAYER OF THE MATCH) thanks God for all the blessings. Says that he was due for a big knock as he had been hitting it well in the nets. Praises the lower order for showing an amazing fight and giving him support. Says that he wasn't tired today despite the heroics yesterday. Accepts that it was a great delivery from Starc and that he didn't expect it from the pacer at that stage.
Australia's pacers had a good game with Starc being the standout performer. He struck vital blows and his fitness level was laudable. Amir and Wahab had a good game for Pakistan with both bat and ball. Overall, Australia would be pleased at having crossed the line but it certainly was a real scare for them. Pakistan will get confidence going into the crucial Boxing Day Test. AUSTRALIA'S 28-YEAR UNBEATEN RECORD AT THE GABBA CONTINUES.
Pakistan did manage to get to 142 courtesy Sarfraz and Amir but importantly, kept the Aussies a bit more longer on the field and that influenced Smith's debatable call not to enforce the follow-on. The Australians racked up quick runs through Smith and Khawaja to set Pakistan a target that looked improbable but almost became probable in the end. Such is the uncertainty of this game. High quality entertainment it was for sure.
Wahab's dismissal in the final over of day probably was vital as it just calmed Australia. Shafiq however marched on even after getting his century and found able support from Yasir. The required runs came below 50 and pressure rose before a Starc special dislodged Shafiq to settle the game. It looked very rosy for the Aussies over the first two days. Centuries from Smith and Handscomb had propelled them to a challenging score before their bowlers reduced Pakistan to 67/8.
What an absolute cracker of a game! Pakistan looked dead and buried on day two but have then fought back amazingly to go down fighting. Chasing a mammoth target of 490, Azhar and Younis set the platform yesterday but it didn't seem like the visitors were going for the target. However, things changed once Shafiq and the guys below him joined forces. Sarfraz and Amir counterattacked to give the visitors serious belief while Wahab too dug in.

Mitchell Starc To Yasir Shah OUT!
OUT! SMITH SEALS IT! Brilliant stuff from the Aussie captain. It was a very full ball on off, Yasir just about kept it out towards second slip on the bounce but in the process had gone out of his crease. Smith collects the ball and is alert enough to fire a direct hit at the keeper's end. No doubt at that as Yasir was well short. What an anti-climax but it's been one heck of a contest for sure! AUSTRALIA WIN BY 39 RUNS.

Mitchell Starc To Asad Shafiq OUT!
OUT! THAT'S A RIPPER! Surely that's the death blow for Pakistan. Starc produces an real gem to dislodge Shafiq. Dug in short around off, 143 kph, climbs awkwardly on Asad who fends meekly at it. The ball flies off the top half of the blade and balloons towards gully. Warner takes the catch with ease and the Australians are absolutely pumped up. That's the wicket they needed and what a time to get it. An absolute masterclass from Shafiq ends and he leaves to a standing ovation from the crowd. Well played son! AUSTRALIA NEED JUST 1 WICKET.

FOUR! FAB SHOT! That's adding salt to the wounds. After struggling for the earlier in the over, he unleashes a lovely cut through backward point to find the fence. It was too short and wide from Hazlewood, paid the price. PAKISTAN JUST NEED 42 MORE NOW.

Josh Hazlewood To Asad Shafiq
Beaten! Shafiq is losing his focus a bit at the moment. Good length just outside off, he pokes at it and is lucky not to nick it. All the luck seems to be with the tourists at the moment.

ALMOST! Twice in two balls, Shafiq has escaped. Full ball around off, tails in a bit as Shafiq goes for the flick. Cannot keep it down and it just eludes a diving Renshaw at short mid-wi8cket as the ball goes to mid on. Single taken.

Josh Hazlewood To Yasir Shah
YES, TOO HIGH! Good length around off, nips in sharply as Yasir offers no stroke. He is hit on the back leg and the Aussies go up in appeal for it. The lbw appeals is given. Yasir opts for the review. No shot offered, so impact won't count. It just has to hit the stumps. Ball tracking shows it missing the off stump. Yasir survives. Pakistan's supporters can breathe easy.
