Inn Break
That is it then from this game and London Spirit Women have knocked Welsh Fire Women out of the playoff race with their first win of the season. It is now time for the Men from the same teams to battle it out in the next game of the day. That game will start at 11 pm IST (5.30 pm GMT) but you can catch the build-up for the same by switching tabs. Cheers!
Charlotte Dean, the skipper of London Spirit Women says that it is good to get the first win and tells that it was tough to be on the road and it is nice to be back at Lord’s. Tells that the atmosphere at Lord’s is always special and talks about her captaincy and says that it helps her to keep her mind straight and simple. Mentions that the start was not good in the Powerplay with the ball and credits Freya Davies for the way she bowled and adds that she has not used her fully so far. Applauds Beth Mooney and says that it is amazing to have her around the group and adds that she scores in almost every game. Also mentions that her experience helps her during captaincy too.
Beth Mooney (61* off 39 balls) is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. She says that it was nice to get a good score at Lord’s and it is good to get a win in front of the home crowd. Tells that bowlers did quite well with the ball and restricted them to a low score and they reaped the rewards of it. Applauds Danielle Gibson for her performance and says that she took her opportunity and is a clean striker of the ball. Tells that in this format, it is it all about doing the basics right and they missed it in first few games and is happy to get a win in this match.
The Presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, Tammy Beaumont won the toss yet again and after opting to bowl first in all their previous games, she decided to bat first. This seemed to be the right decision, atleast till the Powerplay ended. After that, the openers failed to accelerate and the wickets started to tumble. No one in the middle order could really bat for a long period of time and that meant they finished with a small total on the board. London Spirit Women bowlers recovered really quickly after the early setback and once Freya Davies got that double breakthrough, they were able to squeeze the flow of runs as well as get more wickets. With just 120 needed to win, Welsh Fire Women were blown away by the openers of London Spirit Women and it was Beth Mooney who scored big and saw her side home.
Welsh Fire Women have been outclassed here and that means that neither the Men's nor the Women's team of the Fire has been able to win a single match so far. With an under-par total on the board, their bowlers needed to replicate what they did in the last game but it wasn't meant to be. Each and every bowler that came on was just hit away and the chances created were a few and far in between. Annabel Sutherland did bowl well and Claire Nicholas and Lauren Filer did get a wicket each but it was never going to be enough. They will now look to get a win off their remaining two games and avoid a season without a single win.
All London Spirit Women needed was a decent Powerplay with the bat and Danielle Gibson and Beth Mooney made sure they got just that. Gibson was aggressive right from the get-go and Mooney too found the fence with regularity. The pair put on 66 runs for the first wicket and took the sting out of the run-chase then and there. Gibson fell but Mooney kept on accelerating and notched up another half-century, ending with 61* and in the process, also became the leading scorer in the Women's competition this year. All in all, an easy victory for London Spirit Women who will now look to build on it.
Finally, London Spirit Women do get that elusive first win of the season and what a win this has been! They have been the better side for pretty much all of the game and have deserved the win. As for Welsh Fire Women, a fourth successive loss means they are well and truly out of the playoff race.
