Inn Break
That ends a totally one-sided match. England carry forward the points from the wins into the Super Six while Scotland have tried all that they could, though they could have been better. Despite such a heavy defeat, they sit above Zimbabwe in the points table, which means that if Pakistan beat Zimbabwe on Thursday, Scotland will also go through to the Super Six. Three matches are scheduled on 22nd January, 2026 - Zimbabwe vs Pakistan, Ireland vs Japan and South Africa vs West Indies. The first two are more of a knockout type of match but we believe that all three games would be interesting. All three matches start at 7.30 am GMT, but our buildup will begin well in advance. So do tune in early. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
The victorious skipper of England Under-19, THOMAS REW, is very happy with the win. Says that Mayes' knock was a special innings and even that partnership between Mayes and Moores was brilliant to watch. On the team's chat as a batting group on setting any particular score as a target, Rew says that they don't really like to set too many targets, emphasizing that all batters just like to go out and bat. Rew adds that Mayes played his own game as well but yes, there was a constant attempt to target the shorter boundaries. On his abundant bowling resources, Thomas says that the big thing for his bowlers is short spells. Explains that saves energy and bowlers have a few more overs going at the back end. Rew further says that whenever he is thinking of introducing a bowler, he is always ready, due to the short spells. On their next set of games being in Bulawayo, where they had their warm-up games, TR remembers that England played India down there. Informs that his side will have a bit more practice as they touch down in Bulawayo a couple of days early to try and assess the conditions. Wants to take this momentum into the Super Six stage.
The captain of Scotland Under-19, THOMAS KNIGHT, calls it a disappoining day. Explains that they missed the mark with the ball and in the field. Gives full marks to Ben Mayes for batting well. On his own team's batting performance, Knight says that they had set the marker as 250, so fell well short. On the sorry day, Thomas just puts it down to an unbelievable knock from Mayes. Adds that all his bowlers were trying to do is bowl their best balls, but unfortunately, they did not work. On starts not being converted with the bat, TK feels that Scotland could have sealed their place in this match but missed the mark. Adds that his side was good in patches with both bat and ball and hence, has more negatives from this game than positives. On future plans, if given a chance, Thomas Knight wants better consistency from his side, especially with the ball. Ends by saying that with the bat, they just needed somebody to go big and bat a lot better just like the way they did aginst Pakistan.
England Under-19's BEN MAYES HAS BEEN ADJUDGED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH, for his mammoth 191 (117). Humbly says that he just didn't expect that he would get that many this morning. Praises Joe Moores for his knock at the top and adds that the others also chipped in, calling it a good team performance overall. On his lack of form before this tournament, Mayes says that he just trusted himself and tried to go away from the game for a bit, but does not want to give any excuses for his lack of form. Is more than happy to get it back though. On the bowling plans, Ben says that they took experience from their game against Zimbabwe at this venue and studied the shorter size of the boundary. Adds that the wind helped as well. On his stint with Hampshire, BM calls it a crucial step in his career, adding that Hampshire have been very influential on his development as a cricketer.
... THE PRESENTATION ...
Earlier in the day, after being asked to bat first, England came out all guns blazing. Despite losing an early wicket and having a maiden in the opening over, they ended up with a mammoth 404/6 - their highest total in Youth ODIs and also the highest score in this World Cup. Ben Mayes was the star of the show, narrowly missing his double hundred, as he made 191, while his 188-run stand with Joe Moores put Scotland on the mat. There were meaningful contributions from almost all the batters down the order as the ball just kept travelling to the fence frequently. Please stay tuned for the presentation.
Tough work for England with the ball, striving hard to pick up the 10 wickets despite enforcing two collapses but they would be happy with their effort. With the opposition batters not wanting to attack, all the English bowlers settled into a nice rhythm from ball one. As many as 7 bowling options were used and barring Sebastian Morgan, everyone claimed at least a wicket. Caleb Falconer ended up with the most wickets, taking 3/19.
The 5th wicket partnership read 33 but then Scotland suffered another collapse, as they slipped from 85/4 to 87/7. However, the trio of Carter, Jake Woodhouse and Ethan Ramsay offered dogged resistance to take the score past 150. The fight was excellent in terms of staying at the wicket but the innings hardly had intent. Scotland hit only 18 fours and 1 six in their entire innings. On the flip side, Ben Mayes single-handedly smashed 18 fours and 8 sixes, while England totalled 46 hits to the fence.
When you are chasing a total as high as 405, you are expected to go hammer and tongs, but the Scots preferred on keeping wickets in hand. They managed 38 for the opening wicket, but after consuming 11 overs. They then suffered a collapse to 52/4, before Max Chaplin and Finlay Carter tried to show some fight.
Scotland Under-19 lose to Ben Mayes alone by 39 runs. That's how sorry the batting performance has been. Their overall defeat margin is 252 runs, their third biggest margin of defeat in Youth ODIs. The loss was always around the corner, but the type of batting shown was not exactly what the team would have envisaged.

Caleb Falconer To Ram Sharma OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! That's a wrap to the contest as England Under-19 win this by 252 runs. Back of a length, around off, Ram Sharma stays leg side to it and pokes at it but only manages an outside edge that's taken cleanly by the keeper. Thomas Rew had to dive in front to catch this one and he does that well.

DRINKS BREAK. Just like Tino Mawoyo on air, even we are not able to comprehend what are Scotland exactly getting out of this game with this type of a batting effort. Their biggest margin of defeat in Youth ODIs is 301 runs, against the West Indies in Dunedin, in 2002. That has certainly been avoided but don't know what is going to help with that, apart from a cheap pleasure. At this rate, even if they play out 50 overs, the maximum they will be reaching is somewhere between 180 and 200 and still, the defeat margin would be more than 200 runs, which will be very lethal for their future progress, even if Zimbabwe lose to Pakistan on Thursday. England would be frustrated as well. The Brits picked up wickets in clusters, that too, twice, but are finding it difficult to run through Scotland. 38/0 became 52/4 and then 85/4 became 87/7. Still, the tussle continues. Farhan Ahmed to bowl now. 6-2-18-1 so far.

DRINKS BREAK. Sadly, this game is going nowhere. Understandably, Scotland do not want to lose wickets in trying to play big shots. But by not playing shots at all, they are just digging a hole so deep, that even if they do manage to play out their 50 overs, it is not going to help their net run rate at all. England have been excellent, not trying too hard and not being desperate. They have understood that patience is the mother of all virtues and are sticking to it. They took a whole of 11 overs for the first wicket, but then got the next 2 in the span of around 3 overs. Someone will have to do something from the batting side to enliven this contest.

Well, that's really lucky for Knight. Wonder how the bails were rooted to the groove despite the ball hitting the stumps so hard. I have seen the bails go up and then land back on the stumps, but to not move at all, in spite of such a force, is unreal.
