India will take the ground on the fifth and final day of the second Test against England on Tuesday at Trent Bridge needing just 63 runs to register a victory.
Chasing 73 to win, India was 10 without loss at stumps on day four with Dinesh Karthik and Wasim Jaffer in the middle on six and three, respectively.
Earlier in the day, Zaheer Khan took five wickets as England's second innings folded up for 355 runs. The Indian pacer, who took four wickets in the first innings, finished with five for 75 from 27 overs in England's second essay.
In another brilliant performance of the day, England skipper Michael Vaughan played an inspirational knock bringing up his 17th Test ton and crossing the 5000 Test run mark. His 124 helped England overcome the 283-run deficit, but could not take England to safety.
Starting the day at the overnight score of 43 without loss, England lost Alastair Cook in the first 15 minutes of play. He was trapped lbw by Zaheer for 23.
Michael Vaughan and Andrew Strauss then steadied the England innings with an 81-run partnership. Strauss brought up his 11th Test fifty and Vaughan completed 5000 Test runs.
Zaheer got the second breakthrough right after lunch when he had Strauss caught behind by Mahendra Singh Dhoni for 55.
Kevin Pietersen, whose 134 had taken away the match from India at Lord's, failed with the bat. He suvived a vociferous caught behind appeal, but was out next ball - lbw for 19 to RP Singh.
Vaughan played majestically to erase the 283-run deficit. He played shots all around the park and sent the fielders on a leather hunt.
But on 124, luck deserted him as Zaheer Khan struck with the second new ball. The delivery rapped his pads, hit the wickets and disloged the bails. Two balls later, Ian Bell followed his skipper to the pavillion, lbw for zero.
From a comfortable 287 for three, England was reduced to 287 for five.
Matt Prior also did not last long and lost his middle stump to RP Singh for seven.
Zaheer then picked up his fifth wicket when he had Paul Collingwood caught by Dinesh Karthik for 63.
Kumble, who had gone wicketless before, picked up the last three wickets. He had Chris Tremlett caught by RP Singh for five and then accounted for Monty Panesar, caught by Karthik for four. James Anderson was the last man out, bowled for one.
