World 100-metre record holder Tim Montgomery edged Australia's Patrick Johnson to win the marquee sprint event at the IAAF Osaka Grand Prix on Saturday. Montgomery ran a 10.04 at Osaka's Nagai Municipal Athletic Stadium, nipping Johnson by 0.01 second in a duel between the world's fastest man and an up-and-coming challenger who has clocked the fastest 100 of this year. It was the first win for Montgomery in his second race since running a 9.78 in Paris last September to dethrone Olympic and world champion Maurice Greene as the king of sprint. Local favourite Shingo Suetsugu of Japan came in third at 10.16. American Bernard Williams, the bronze medallist behind Greene and Montgomery at the 2001 world championships, was fourth at 10.17 and never pushed the leaders. In the women's competition, Chryste Gaines of the United States won the 100 metres in 11.03, followed by fellow American Kelly White and Mary Onyali-Omagbemi of Nigeria. (AP)
