ENG vs AUS, 1st Ashes Test, Day 2 Highlights: Usman Khawaja Slams Ton As Australia Reach 311/5 vs England

We are back for the afternoon session on Day 3 as the umpires make their way out to the middle. The Australian players get onto the field and take their respective fielding positions while Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett will open the innings for England. Pat Cummins has the new ball in his hand and will begin proceedings. Let's go...

Australia will have to bowl out of their skins to keep the aggressive England batters in check in the third innings and we expect some entertainment to come our way. Will England score at a rapid rate and take the game away from the Aussies? Or will their plans backfire giving the visitors a golden opportunity to run through their batting order? Australia did not try to match England's batting style and started off cautiously on Day 2 having scored 14 runs on Day 1 in four overs. David Warner played a poor shot in the quest to up the ante and lost his wicket to Stuart Broad and Marnus Labuschagne was gone on the very next ball leaving Australia in tatters. Steven Smith stayed on for a while but could not make a substantial score as he was dismissed by Ben Stokes. The middle order stood up for the Aussies and the likes of Travis Head, Cameron Green, and Alex Carey, all made handy contributions and added valuable runs with the centurion Usman Khawaja. Cummins too scored a quick-fire 38 to get Australia closer to the English total but the rest of the tail could not contribute much. Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson claimed three wickets each with Moeen Ali chipping in with two wicket having bowled a long spell. James Anderson and Ben Stokes claimed one wicket each and England will feel that their gamble to declare early has paid off as the game is well and truly alive.

SESSION SUMMARY- 75 runs, 22.1 overs, 5 wickets. Some terrific bowling just before Lunch by England sees them bundle out Australia for 386, getting a small lead of 7 runs. This has been England’s session all the way and they have staked their advantage in this tie. James Anderson started the day by dismissing Alex Carey with a peach of the delivery. Pat Cummins joined Usman Khawaja out in the middle and the duo looked solid at the crease. They added 34 before Khawaja looked to pick up the scoring rate and was cleaned up by Ollie Robinson. English pacers deployed the short ball tactics against the Aussie tail and they were rewarded instantly as Ollie Robinson claimed two more and Stuart Broad picked up once as well. The last four wickets fell in a hurry and England will want to take this momentum into their batting in the second inning.

OUT! CAUGHT! Australia trail by 7 runs and England will be thrilled with their effort this morning as they have managed to run through the Aussie tail in a jiffy! Ollie Robinson has been the destroyer-in-chief as he has claimed three wickets to give his side a slight advantage in this match. Ollie Robinson bangs this in short and outside the off stump. Pat Cummins is looking for some quick runs and takes on the bouncer with a pull shot but the ball skids through to him quicker than he anticipated. He manages to get a top edge that flies high towards deep mid-wicket. Ben Stokes comes running in from the deep and holds on to the catch to see his side take a slender first-inning lead. That will be Lunch on Day 3!

Back of a length again, angled down the leg. Cummins tucks it to fine leg for a single to retain the strike.

SIX! SMOKED! Back of a length delivery around off. Cummins backs away and clubs this hard over the deep mid-wicket fence for a a huge hit.

Bowls this one back of a length as well and outside off. Josh Hazlewood guides this down to third man and gets off the mark with a run.

OUT! CAUGHT! Stuart Broad has joined the party in dismantling the Australian tail with short-pitched deliveries! This is well-directed at the batter and bowled back of a length. Scott Boland gets on his toes and looks to fend this one away. The ball hits high on the bat and lobs up towards the silly point fielder. Ollie Pope has the easiest of catches to take and Scott Boland turns around to make the long walk back to the shed. England still have a lead and Australia are now nine wickets down. This game has moved really fast in this first session of Day 3!

On a good length this time and outside the off stump. Scott Boland defends this solidly into the off side.

Stuart Broad bowls this back of a length and going down leg. Pat Cummins looks to make room but gets cramped. He still manages to pull this towards deep backward square leg for a single.

Another short ball from round the wicket at the middle and off stump. Boland ducks again and lets it go through.

Goes short and angles it down the leg. Boland ducks under and lets it pass.

Nails the yorker at the stumps. Boland gets his bat down in time and digs it out back down the pitch.

Scott Boland is the new man at number 10 for Australia.

OUT! CAUGHT! The short ball ploy continues to work as Ollie Robinson has his second wicket in two overs! He bangs this in once again and delivers it outside off. Nathan Lyon continues to attack instead of defending and connects his pull shot this time. He does not get enough elevation and power so the ball goes straight towards the fielder at deep square leg. Ben Duckett waits for the ball and catches it low inches above the ground. England have their eighth wicket now and will be optimistic of getting these last two wickets before they go into Lunch.

Another short ball delivered outside the off stump. Nathan Lyon looks to pull this one away as well and the ball goes off the toe end of the bat towards backward point.

Ollie Robinson bowls this back of a length and on an off-stump line. Nathan Lyon looks to swat this one away with one leg lifted off the ground but misses and gets hit on the body.
