Shillong Lajong FC defeated Royal Wahingdoh 2-1 on Saturday to be the champions of the 2015 Shillong Premier League (SPL). Bipin Singh and Rupert Nongrum scored the two goals for the winners. (Read more football stories here)
Shillong Lajong has been in brilliant form throughout the season as they have scored a total of 32 goals in the SPL.
It was a rather slow start to the match for both teams. Shillong Lajong's midfield looked composed in the first half and did well to control the game and keep possession. Royal Wahingdoh FC conceded a lot of corners but Shillong Lajong could not capitalise on the opportunities.
Shillong Lajong took the lead in the 14th minute after Samuel Lalmuanpuia gave Bipin a through pass in the box. Bipin made no mistake and put the ball past the keeper.
The match gained some pace after the goal with both teams playing at a higher tempo. Royal Wahingdoh were pressing forward on numerous occasions but Shillong Lajong's defenders did well to keep the strikers at bay.
In the 52nd minute, Shilloing Lajong's custodian made a mistake of throwing the ball to Royal Wahingdoh Forward, Nagen Tamang, who then lobbed the ball over the keeper to restore parity.
As the hour mark passed, both teams were attacking well in search of the lead. The game became more intense but no more goals were scored in the regulation time. The match proceeded to extra-time, when Shillong Lajong got the winner.
In the 106th minute, Nongrum scored the all important goal that made Shillong Lajong FC as they were once again crowned as the Champions of the Shillong Premier League 2015.
