Australia, set what would have been a new Ashes fourth-innings record winning total of 412, were bowled out for 242 after tea as England went 1-0 up in the five-match series with more than a day to spare.

Stuart Broad claimed three wickets on the fourth day's play.

Moeen Ali too had three wickets - including that of Steve Smith and Michael Clarke.

Clarke scored 38 before being caught and bowled by Moeen. The Aussie captain would later rue the effort and promised a better fight in the 2nd Test.

Joe Root was declared man-of-the-match for his all-round efforts. It was this catch of Mitchell Starc that sealed the win for England.

Captain Alastair Cook was as pleased as he was relieved after the win. "We could not have asked for more in this Test," he said.
