Kevin Pietersen led the way in the morning with 64.
James Pattinson struck to remove Pietersen and the Aussies were back in the game.
Alastair Cook made a patient fifty at the other end.
But Cook could not cause further damage as he fell to Ashton Agar for 50.
Matt Prior played a good hand of 31 before falling to Peter Siddle.
Ian Bell looked calm and composed as he hit 95 not out.
Stuart Broad played a good support role with 47 not out as England ended the day 261 runs ahead of Australia.
