The Ashes: Steve Smith ton rescues Australia on Day 1 of Perth Test

Steve Smith scored his 2nd Test ton as Australia went on to score 326 for 6 at stumps on Day 1 of the third Ashes Test against England at WACA Perth on Friday.

England were off to a rousing start as opener Chris Rogers was run out for 11 in the second over.

Soon it was 52 for two as Shane Watson fell to Stuart Broad for 18. David Warner was going strong on the other end.

Warner was batting with gay abandon and not allowing the bowlers to settle down. He and Clarke took the hosts past 100 before lunch.

However, minutes before lunch, Michael Clarke fell to Graeme Swann, making it England's session.

Steve Smith showed composure as wickets continued to fall on the other end with Warner and George Bailey falling in quick succession.

In-form Brad Haddin then forged a much-needed 124-run stand with Smith. Haddin scored a responsible yet stroke-filled 55 after previously scoring two fifties and a hundred in the first two Tests.

Steven Smith then took centrestage, in an enterprising unfinished stand for the seventh wicket with Mitchell Johnson, completing his second ton and first at home. His 103* was laced with 13 fours and two sixes. Australia end the day at 326 for 6 after 87 overs.
