Alastair Cook, after being put in to bat by his Australian counterpart, was the first of the England batsmen to be dismissed. Cook made 27 and added 48 for the first wicket with Michael Carberry.

After dismissing Michael Carberry for 38, Watson got an injury setback with pain in the groin. He left the field towards the latter part of the second session and returned on the field in the final session of play.

Ryan Harris took two crucial wickets to dent the English middle order, accounting for Joe Root and Ian Bell, who scored 24 and 27, respectively.

Kevin Pietersen was one of the few bright spots for England on Thursday, but he too had to struggle to get runs. Here, Pietersen is seen reacting after swallowing a fly en route his fighting knock.

Mitchell Johnson's spell with the second new ball turned the tide in Aussie's favour as he struck twice to dismiss Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow cheaply.

After that rollicking spell from Johnson, the Aussie players, quite literally silenced the Barmy Army fans at the MCG.

But for England, Kevin Pietersen holds the key with an unbeaten 67-run knock. He will have to take England out of a tricky 226 for 6 once Day 2 begins on Friday.
