World T20: Sri Lanka send England home

Thanks to a brilliant allround display by the players, Sri Lanka ended England's run in the World T20 after beating them by 19 runs. Needing a win to qualify for the semis, England fell woefully short of their target.

Put in to bat, the Lankans got off to a good start with Mahela Jayawardena hit 42 from 38 and was looking good for a big score.

Graeme Swann pulled things back from England as he removed Jayawardena and Sangakkara one after the other.

Angelo Mathews looked set for a big one as he smashed 28 runs off 19 balls. Sri Lanka were clearly pushing for a 180 plus score.

Stuart Broad bowled some tight overs scalping 3 wickets and it seemed that Sri Lanka would not get more than 150 at one point.

Thisara Perera's 26 off 16 gave the innings the necessary boost and the hosts finished at 169/6 in what was a must win game for the visitors.

Lasith Malinga did not help the English cause as he picked up 3 wickets in his very first over getting Wright, Hales and Bairstow. He would finish off with 5 wickets in the innings.

Samit Patel was the sole thorn in Sri Lanka's side as he hit 67 from 48 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes to give England an outside chance of qualifying. Graeme Swann hit 34 from 20 as the pair added 51 runs for the eighth wicket.

But England could not achieve their objective ending up at 150/9, 20 runs short of victory. Sri Lanka top their group and enter the semifinals ahile England go home. West Indies also make it to the last four courtesy Sri Lanka's victory.
