Before the start of the second day at The Oval, there were some enthusiastic Gaza protests going on outside the ground and wristbands were being distributed. Moeen Ali was seen in one of those bands recently during the series and that caused a huge furore.

England captain Alastair Cook fought his way to another gritty half-century as the home team reached a comfortable 148 for one against India at lunch.

At the break, Cook was unbeaten on 56 with in-form Gary Ballance undefeated on 40 in an unbroken 82-run stand for the second wicket after Varun Aaron had removed opener Sam Robson (37) early in the day.

England began the second session looking to drive home their advantage after Alastair Cook's (79) half-century had helped level the scores at lunch. The skipper continued his 82-run partnership with Gary Ballance (64 runs, 117 balls, 13 fours) and they further added 43 more runs, totalling a second-wicket stand of 125 runs. Gary Ballance is the leading run-getter for England in Tests this year - his tally being 729 (ave.60.75), including three hundreds and three fifties, in 13 innings.

Finally some luck came the Indian bowlers' way as Murali Vijay held on to a chance offered by Alastair Cook in the 58th over bowled by Varun Aaron after the Indian fielders gave plenty of lifelines to Cook. The hosts captain was finally dismissed for 79 runs off 183 balls with nine fours included.

Joe Root slammed an unbeaten 92 as England took a substantial first innings lead of 237 runs on the second day. Resuming the day on 62 for no loss after bundling India out for 148 yesterday, England scored at a brisk pace by adding 323 runs today from 86 overs to end the day on 385 for seven at an Oval pitch which has eased out considerably.
