Virat Kohli has come of age

Virat Kohli notched up his 7th ODI hundred to gift India an easy win in the 2nd ODI against England. The knock again underlined how vital Kohli has become to the Indian team, at least in the one-day format.

With 1017 runs at an average of 44.21, Kohli is the third highest run-getter in ODIs in 2011, behind only Jonathan Trott (1173) of England and Australia's Shane Watson (1075).
Zoom
His form and contribution this year can be judged from the fact that the second Indian on the list of the highest run-getters is captain MS Dhoni, who has scored 639 runs and is 12th.
Zoom
His knock of 112 in the Kotla match against England is his second best score, next only to the 118 he scored against Australia in October 2010.

Kohli first came into the spotlight when he played for Delhi in a Ranji trophy match against Karnataka on the day of his father's death. Even though he was needed at home he said that he wanted to bat and scored 90 runs.
Zoom
Then in 2008 he became only the second Indian captain to bring home the U-19 World Cup. He chipped in with 235 runs in the tournament.
Zoom
Soon after he was selected by Royal Challengers Bangalore for the inaugural Indian Premier League for only $30,000. He didn't fare too well, scoring only 165 runs in 13 innings, but by the end of the next two seasons he had become so vital that he became the only player to be retained by RCB for IPL 4, ahead of the likes of Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid.
Zoom
The U-19 success got him included in India's squad for the one-day series in Sri Lanka in August 2008 and the Champions Trophy to follow in Pakistan.
Zoom
He was, however, dropped for the Sri Lanka tour in Januray 2009. By his own admission the rather early success got into his head and he lost his way.
Zoom
Now Kohli is an attacking player with a cool head, which has already earned him a reputation as a level-headed and mature cricketer and he has made the No. 4 spot in the star studded team his own.
Zoom
The same, however, can not be said about his Test career. Kohli has played only 3 Tests so far. He was picked for the West Indies series in June 2011 but failed miserably, scoring only 70 runs in 3 matches. He is still expected to work his magic in the longest format too, sooner than later.
