Following his elder brother Douglas Hondo started off his career at a young age. Under the guidance of his school coach Hondo excelled at school level. He was under the able hands of Dennis Lillie at the MRF Pace Academy in Chennai and from there he went on to play domestic cricket in England and Australia.

Hondo, despite being in bad form in 2001, was selected for the away Test series against South Africa. In the same year also made his ODI debut against England. Due to his barren form, he was sent to play domestic cricket in Australia along with team-mate Stuart Matsikenyeri and after consistent performances and regaining his form, he was rewarded with a call-up for the ODI series against India. Hondo’s consistent performances in the series against India and England made him a regular in the national side and earned him a place in the ICC Champions Trophy side. After a series of back and hamstring injuries he was forced to take a break from cricket in January 2005. He last played in Zimbabwe's tour of Bangladesh in 2005. After taking a break from playing cricket, Hondo turned to coaching, starting with the Ipswich Cricket Club.
